Being available at Back to School Night in the fall helps immensely with creating relationships with families. I have found that in Read 180, I really need to be able to easily and frequently communicate with parent/guardians. The only way I've found this to work is using a Google Voice number (my personal number is protected) to text parents/guardians. I also utilize email of course, but texting is the most efficient way to communicate with parents and I have used it to contact an AP parent as well. This year I've been much better about sending positive messages home and student work as well.

Some of the lessons discuss students rights in public schools and any time I see a news story that affects students, I share it. Linked is an example of a lesson where I included a news story out of Texas about a student who was suspended for how he did his hair and the student sued the school. Students always have opinions about this news story and is a perfect segue into the lesson.

Even though the classes are different, there is overlap in the variety of instructional resources. I have found sentence starters/frames (in AP this is only used in the fall and in Read 180 all year) to be a good strategy, Padlet is another beneficial resource to both, and so are assignments that offer student choice.
