Mrs. O's Favorite Line and Big Idea for Our Town

Big Idea Statement: Even the smallest event of our daily life is inestimably valuable, because it can't be repeated. It doesn't matter how mundane this second Tuesday of 2019 may seem--it's the only chance I will ever have to live this particular twenty-four hours. That means love intentionally, love fiercely, and care deeply. Then, there will be no room for regret. There is no excuse for not caring...and I think that's what Our Town is all about.
Golden Line: Every line of this play is deeply meaningful to me, so I honestly don't have just one golden line, but here is one favorite that connects with my big idea: "Choose the least important day in your life. That will be important enough" (Wilder 100). Mrs. Gibbs says this to Emily when she's choosing to return to her past. She suggests that from the perspective of eternity, even a fleeting happiness will seem extremely painful, as Emily recognizes all of the things she couldn't see while she was alive.

Father Gibbs is bringing some of my flowers to you. He looks just like George, Doesn't he? Oh, Mother Gibbs, I never realized before how troubled and how... how in the dark live persons are. Look at him. From morning to night, that's all they are- troubled." (Thornton Wilder)

If we live life to the fullest each and every day, we will not regret it.
Golden Line: "Emily, I feel that you're as good a friend as I've got. I don't need to go and meet the people in other towns"(Wilder 70). I like this line because it expresses the moment that George decides not to go to agriculture school, and to stay in Grover's Corners with Emily.

Even though she chose an unimportant moment, she wanted relive it differently.

Golden Line: "Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?-every, every minute?"
I chose this line because it shows how Emily realized how important every minute was, and she didn't see it until she died.

(Wilder 108)
Stage Manager: "No" (Wilder 108)
I like this line because it is very true. It is a little unsettling in a way, that we don't realize our own life, but I think this line makes us want to strive to understand life.

Big Idea: Realize life while you live it. I stole this from my favorite line, but I still think this hits the mark with what the play is about. Everybody wants more and more. A new car, a new TV, a new lawnmower, whatever it is, you try to get it. you get so focused in it that you don't realize life while you are living it.

Big Idea Statement: Life seems unimportant while you are living it, but when it's gone you finally see how important it was. It is only when we are close to death that we look at everything on this earth with an importance. No one seems to see life until it is gone. Mother Gibbs mentions how even the smallest thing is important in life. I think this is very true. There are many people who live like it is their last day on earth, but when you are close to death any unimportant day would be enough for that person.
Golden Line: My favorite line from the play is, " They're wait'n. They're wait'n for something that they feel is comin'. Something important, and great. Aren't they wait'n for the eternal part in them to come out clear?"(Wilder 88). I chose this as my golden line because of the way Thornton Wilder mentions God in Act Three Monologue. I think that it is true for everyone in some part of them.

Big Idea Statement: "Appreciate life and its little moments while you can." Throughout Emily's life, she didn't notice the little things. Like how she forgot about George's gift to her on her 12th birthday. Once she saw it, she remembered the significance of it. She kept living her life while not paying any attention to the smallest details to appreciate in life.
Favorite Line: "No... I should have listened to you. That's all human beings are! Just blind people" (Wilder 109). Emily took into account that people never really watch for the little things in life. They want to live fast and never want to stop and look at the stars. They only want to see when it's all gone.

It feels unimportant as you are in the moment but if you lose that person you were with, it makes all the difference.
Golden Line: "Pick the most unimportant day of your' life, it'll be important enough." that's a short line but it seems like Emily doesn't understand yet on how painful that would've been. And it was her birthday but because of her age that day probably got more and more unimportant. But she chose it anyway, seeing her parents there and knowing just how much they loved her probably made her feel that she took things for granted and that's why everything made her cry in the end.

Big Idea for Our Town: You are only given your life here on earth once, so treasure it with all your heart before the eternal part comes.
I chose this big idea because Our Town shows us exactly what life means to everyone after you lose it. Emily shows us. The Stage Manager also talks about the eternal part of human beings multiple times in the book. Once your life is done, you can't go back and try to treasure it more. You are eternally in the eternal. However, the eternal part that the Stage Manager talks about will stay with you. Thornton Wilder makes that very clear to us.
Golden Line: "We all know that something is eternal. And it ain't houses and it ain't names, and it ain't earth, and it ain't even the stars... everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings" (Wilder 87 - 88).

I feel like Our Town is trying to tell us to live each day with great joy and a purpose.

Golden Line: “Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it—every, every minute?” I really like this golden line because it shows us how we don't realize how we are living our life every day. We don't take every minute that its going to be our last minute. We have the perspective that we have tomorrow but truly we don't know if we will have tomorrow. We need to live in the present not in the future.

I love you all, everything. - I can't look at everything hard enough (Wilder 105).
I chose this passage because Emily is realizing how much she takes for granted, and how much she loves her family. It's kind of relatable because we don't always realize how much our families mean to us and we don't always notice how much we love them. We never look at life hard enough to realize how great life actually is.

Big Idea:
My big idea for our town is: Don't take life for granted. Most people are like Emily and take life for granted and don't realize how much they love their friends and family. She doesn't realize how great her life was until she died and was revisiting her life. She noticed in her after life how every moment was significant; which she didn't notice in her actual life. Everyone should live in the moment because this is the only life we get.

(Wilder 108) We all just seem to go through life so fast and tend to take for granted the life that we are given and the things around us and before we know it everything will be gone. Like Simon Stimson said "To spend and waste time as though you had a million years. To always be at the mercy of one self-centered passionor another." (Wilder 109) Is what life is like.

My favorite line from the play is probably "Charles! Don't forget, it's Emily's birthday. Did you remember to get her something?" I think at this moment Emily realizes that humans really are blind and that she does not want to go back. This ends up leading to one of the most sad moments in the play so that is why I chose it. The big idea I have for Our Town is live every second to the fullest. I choose this because you never know how long that you have left on earth. That is my golden line and big idea for Our Town

Favorite Line: "We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars . . . everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings."

I chose this line, because it's so true in our lives. When we die, all of the earthly things go away, but our soul is eternal in us.

Big Idea: Live life to the fullest while you have it.

I chose this big idea statement because Emily and George take their life for granted while Emily is alive. After Emily dies, George is a very glum and sad man, while before, when she was alive, he was full of life and happiness. Also, when Emily went back to her 12th birthday, she realized that she took for granted all the small moments.

Big Idea - Don't take all the little moments for granted, enjoy them because you are not going to always have them.

Favorite Line - "Y’know the dead don’t stay interested in us living people for very long. Gradually, gradually, they let go hold of the earth—and the ambitions they had—and the pleasures they had—and the things they suffered—and the people they loved. They get weaned away from the earth." I chose this line because at the time Emily was so different from everyone. She cared so much and the others didn't. I think this brought out the truth in this line because it showed how when you first get there you care, but eventually you lose that caring for the earth.

Big Idea: Make the most of every moment and enjoy them while they last.
I chose this big idea because Emily regretted how she lived her life. Gradually, gradually, they lose hold of the earth...and the ambitions they had...and the pleasures they had...and the things they suffered...and the people they loved,(Wilder 88).
I chose this line because it was interesting to me that everyone at the grave was calm except Emily.
