In our backyard, there was a long vine of Honeysuckle trailing along the homemade fence that encamped it. I remember interacting with the sweet lovely carefully searching out the most supple yellow ones. The darker the yellow, the sweeter and riper the nectar. Carefully pulling the base off the flower dragging the stamen downward extracting the nectar and popping it in my mouth then back for another. The property there borders the woods and it is the perfect place to forage mushrooms. One of my grandmother's friends, Nello, taught us a lot about foraging mushrooms. When he was a teenager, he escaped Italy during World War II and was in hiding in the woods for weeks before he made it to safety. He and his brother knew all about different uses for plants, which were edible and what they looked like at different stages of growth. We have a dogwood tree in our backyard and in the fall it would create these red fruits (which are edible but not very tasty). They have a thick red skin and the inside is a mushy orange/yellow paste. We would collect all of the fallen berries from the floor and empty out the orange paste into a separate bowl. We would then go around the yard collecting other things to "cook" with the berries. It involves a lot of rituals with plants! Pictured are a lulav (left) and etrog (right). You shake them with a myrtle and willow branch during services. I always loved to smell the citrusy etrog and feel it cool in my hand. I’d forgotten so I’m reading up a bit on the reasons for shaking the four species to all directions. The branches would sag from the weight of all of the heavy persimmons growing. The fruit was so sweet and we'd see squirrels trying to get their arms around the giant fruit and run off at the same time. Our fig tree also had so much fruit that we couldn't eat all of it, but we would try the best that we could! The rest would be turned into jam or left for the animals in the suburbs to eat. Our peach tree never gave us very much fruit before it died, unfortunately. I had never tasted anything like them before. I looked forward to visiting every summer because picking and eating Acerolas was like hunting for treasures. They both had a real gift for nurturing. I learned so many things from them. The things that most stand out to me is how they truly loved their plants. They were like family members. They taught me that plants could feel and hear. They would talk and sing to their plants and taught me to do that as well. I learned that plants had specific needs such as lighting , temperature and even placement. They are special because they don't grow everywhere and like higher elevations and mountains, so you can't get them without going out on a hike. We'd go on huckleberry picking hikes with my dad's extended family when they came out to Montana in the summer. Still, I'm the caretaker of the houseplants in my household. The plants that I manage to keep alive are the ones that need less frequent care. We've had spiderplants, pothos and something I know as a wandering Jew plant for as long as I can remember and have more recently added two types of Christmas cactus, three varieties of kalanchoe, prayer plants, aloe, and a handful of others.
