John J. Pershing would not be considered a great commander, but I think he did earn the title of being a good commander. He displayed his adaptability and recognized he needed to delegate instead of continuing to be in the direct operational command.

He displayed accountability by establishing investigating boards to understand the American Army’s lessons from the war. This would help future commanders by showing them what worked and did not work in war.

For General Pershing to do this, he was admitting that there were flaws and they needed to be addressed.

One of his first post-war acts was to establish a series of investigating boards to capture the American Army’s hard-won lessons from the war. We use something similar today and we call them after-action reports.

General Pershing took the time to mentor upcoming leaders, such as George Patton and George Marshall. A good leader will help those who are coming in behind him to help make them a successful leader.
