#1- Reactive and Proactive Problem Solving

In proactive problem solving, the problem solving process begins BEFORE the crisis occurs. Reactive problem solving occurs as a result of a crisis or problem. The better the team is about using the problem solving process, the quicker it may become and the frequency of proactive problem solving will increase. I chose this because I find much of the problem solving in my grade to be reactive and it would be smart to use the problem solving process.

#2- Response to Intervention (RTI)

RTI is a technical type of problem solving with a predetermined set of solutions. It is reactive and focus on both academics and behavior. IDEA and NCLB have their own perspectives of RTI. I chose this because a lot of schools utilize the RTI model, but having learned that there are different perspectives, I am wondering how schools define their philosophy.

The idea that a special education and general education intersect. Teachers may need to wear multiple hats and money may need to come from multiple sources. While I feel this happens in my school, I also question where the two diverge. We are having a conversation around "out-placing" one of my students so he can receive the emotional and mental support he needs. So much of my training has been about inclusion so navigating this process has been very difficult.

After using data and applying interventions, if a student makes progress they may not need the same level of service to continue to succeed. Just as students may move along the tiers to receive special education services, it is important to remember they can more back down.

Brainwriting is a strategy for developing solutions. Each person writes 3-4 solutions on a blank sheet of paper. People then switch papers and add to someone else's list. This helps people generate new ideas. It is best used when openly discussing ideas is not helpful, when topics are particularly sensitive, or when so many people are involved that not everyone may have the opportunity to speak. I chose this because I am on a number of large teams where I think this could be beneficial.
