The RSF held this campaign in 2014 during the 25th anniversary of the Tienanmen massacre. Not only the organization is campaigning for the release of the picture of the Tienanmen massacre where hundreds of protesters were killed by the military but also demands the freedom of the press and journalism in China. In 2014, as the 25 anniversary approached many Chinese journalists who were famous for criticizing the government went missing. This caused many to suspect the Chinese government itself was involved in the incidents.

After the fall of Gaddafi regime on 23 October 2011, RSF had launched a campaign trying to aware the public of the persecution of journalists and news media in Libya. After the Libya revolution, cases of violence against journalist has soared making it more hard to work for the media to give important information to the people in Libya and the globe to see what is actually going on in the chaotic environment. 
The RSF claims that it is crucial for Libya’s future that all political, military and civilian actors respect freedom of information. The term "Oligarch" was first used in Russia to refer to rich businessmen at that time. The RSF adopted this word to refer to billionaires who have taken control of the social media empires and utilized them to serve his or her personal political purpose. The RSF's latest report shows the world that is conflicted with interest and money, which could bar the freedom of information in certain areas around the world. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is using today’s publication of its 2017 World Press Freedom Index as the occasion to launch a major communication campaign entitled “Spoilers for Freedom.” They were trying to warn the public of how the violence against the media has risen and how it became commonplace in today's democracy. In this campaign, the exiled journalists used the term 'spoiler alert' to show what would happen if the freedom of media was banned. Thus, telling the audience to not let the same course happen in our real life.
