This is called a Quipu, used by the people of Machu Picchu (Incas). It was used as a banking device. The knots on each string were positioned depending on the negative number/ positive number and the system was based off of 10. Each colour represents different objects. This item is important as it gives us an idea of how banking systems worked in 1450-mid 16th century. It shows how their society worked.

Machu Picchu is very important as it was used as a retreat for the ruling class. It was also used as a religious centre. It remained untouched by the Spaniards due to its extreme isolation. Machu Picchu serves as evidence of how advanced the Incas were as they were able to build so high up in the
Andes. Learning about Machu Picchu is useful as it gives us a insight to how people that were blocked off from the rest of the world lived and worked away from their own civilization, showing that people needed time from their normal duties as rulers. The site reminds us of how similar we are to people before us and they lived a very nice lifestyle.
