         <description><![CDATA[<div>We are focusing on Middle School.<br>Gay Lee - We need more research on the Independent School. How big is the gap between honors and non-honors?<br>Gail - Many Independent schools offer accelerated curriculum so even the regular classes are challenging (no remedial).  Another point, Gail's son John thought his strengths were in math &amp; science in MS, but in HS his Language Arts skills developed and he ended up being a philosophy and literature in college. So, how do kids decide passions in MS?<br>Gay Lee - Do they lead with their strengths, or do they follow their friends? Maybe they are so friend focussed that they would make passion decisions based on friendship rather than abilities. <br>Also, there is the parent factor - lots of the parents make decisions for their children based on what they think is important.<br>Sally - there is the danger of the fixed mindset, where kids label themselves as good or bad with honors/regular structure.<br>Gay Lee- maybe we can change the label to "accelerated" instead of honors.  Gay Lee likes the division of regular and accelerated in 7th &amp; 8th. <br>Gail - Also, she teaches different aged children differently. Mixing classes with different ages would be challenging and we would need professional development on how to handle that. <br>Even in the 21st century model, kids would know whether they were as good as their peers in a discipline, or struggling. They would have the sense of their relative position and might still develop a fixed mindset about their abilities<br>Spanish - current structure - its more of the 21st century model, based on ability rather than age. <br>How will high schools receive our kids?<br><br></div>]]></description>
