The lizard is a symbol of Balram's fear and everything that is being used by other people to hold him back.
In the start of the text Balram is scared of the black fort but when he has broken out of the darkness (his old life) he is no longer scared of exploring the fort. The Fort on page 41 and 42 is a symbol. when he was a child he did not dare to go into the fort. but as he got older he decided to visit the fort and climb the wall to look down on the city. Thereby breaking free from his past and and a new beginning.

Foreshadowing:
Page 32, "Without the color, the information is all but useless, isn't it? No wonder i was never spotted". Here he reveals something about his future. It is also a relief in some way.

Page 42, "Eight months later, i slit Mr. Ashock's throat". He reveals that he is going to murder someone in the future.
