Truus created sculptures and later spoke and wrote about their time in the resistance. Freddie coped “by getting married and having babies,” as she told in 2016. But the experience of war still caused her insomnia.

Freddie Oversteegen, her sister Truus, and their friend Hannie Schaft fought against the Nazis during World War II. They would sometimes flirt with Nazi soldiers to trick them and lead them into the woods, where they attacked them. Other times, they waited outside a target’s house to catch them by surprise. They also blew up bridges and railways to stop Nazi supplies from moving. Even though they were young, they showed incredible bravery and risked their lives to free their country.

Freddie Oversteegen was a Dutch girl who joined the resistance during World War II when she was only 14 years old. Along with her sister Truus and friend Hannie Schaft, she fought against the Nazis in secret. Freddie helped hide Jewish people from the Nazis, delivered messages for the resistance, and even took part in dangerous missions like blowing up bridges and ambushing Nazi soldiers. She sometimes acted like a lost girl to distract soldiers, making it easier to attack them. Freddie showed that even someone young and small could be smart, brave, and make a big impact during a very hard time in history.

Freddie Oversteegen’s close friend, Hannie Schaft, was captured by the Nazis in March 1945. Hannie had worked with Freddie and her sister, Truus, in the resistance. After she was arrested, she was tortured and then shot by the Nazis on April 17, 1945, just weeks before the war ended. It is said that her last words were, “I shoot better!” Freddie and Truus were very sad about her death and always remembered her as a brave hero.
