One motif that emerges is silence, which represents loss of hope. One quote that really shows this takes place when the Americans bomb the concentration camp. "Then silence fell once more. The last sound of an American plane was lost on the wind, and we found ourselves back again in the cemetery" (Wiesel 58).

Two lambs with hundreds of wolves lying in wait for them. Two lambs without a shepherd, free for the taking… fear was greater than hunger.” (Wiesel 59)

Shows the motif of hunger and fear because they are all starving for them to have food which represents their craving for freedom and justice but in the end they are too scared of what there punishment would be if they go against the Nazis but in the end its their lack of risk and fight is what ultimately led to their demise.

“[Elie] had watched [his father’s beating] all happening without moving. I kept silent. In fact, I thought of stealing away in order not to suffer the blows.” (Wiesel 54)

This quote represents the themes of dehumanization and silence in the chapter. Throughout the chapter Elie and his dad both experience dehumanization by beaten by Idek. Idek treats both of them like they aren't real human beings and brutally beats them where they experience great pain. It also demonstrates the theme of silence because throughout all of Elie's father's beating everyone stayed silent. No one wanted to step up for him because they were too scared of the punishment. Silence is also represented when Elie

Gold teeth was a motif in chapter 4. To Elie it was his last chance of survival it was the only thing he lived for. This was him holding own to his humanity it was one of his last things that made him feel human and made him worth something. “I felt no pity for him. In fact, I was pleased what was happening to him: my gold crown was safe. It could useful to me one day, to buy something, some bread or even time to live.”(Wiesel 52) This quote shows Elie's desperation to survive in a way the Germans make him less human everyday and there mindset changed to survival somewhat like an animal. This is why the gold teeth is so important because it gives him hope and a piece of humanity.

A common symbol is silence. The power the SS soldiers and Nazi have over them is very clear where they don't have their own voice. I believe this can tie into a bigger theme of maybe how forced silence is a form of dehumanization.

The code that young Elie was given represents his loss in identity. He is no longer Elie Wiesel but referred to as A-7713. This is seen where Elie states, "I was summoned by the block secretary: 'A-7713?' 'That's me" (Wiesel 51). He is now a single line of letters and numbers. He lost his identity. He is now like livestock. He is referred as a number.

It was taken away most people but they caught the dentist. It means them getting everything taken away, like their freedom, so that they will have nothing left.

The absence or withholding of food towards the Jewish prisoners symbolizes dehumanization and lack of empathy. When Wiesel describes the man crawling snakelike towards the cauldrons, he uses imagery to tell the reader that he is inhuman, and just a body searching for food. In the second quote, Juliek is untouched and unbothered by a boy being hung for stealing in the raid. Instead, he just focuses on his next meal.

(Wiesel 49)

Animals- During this chapter, the mention of animals are seen multiple times and represents the mistreatment of Jews and high amounts of dehumanization. This is because the Kapos had selected which Jews they preferred, or liked while making them stand in front of there tents. (new book)
