In 1545 the Spanish brought it into the new world. It came into America because of the English. In 1890 hemp had been replaced by cotton. Marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1850 until 1942 and was prescribed for various conditions like pain. In the 1960's  hippies and college students started using marijuana. Marijuana smoking began an upward trend once more in the early 1990s, especially among teenagers.
