Between the etching and the graphite self portraits each had the main goals of making it look like the picture (life like) and using art techniques to shade and fill in all areas of the picture. Although on the etching it was a little easier
because we were able to trace and fill, and the graphite took more time and patience and was harder to draw without tracing and the etching was mainly a way to help with the graphite self portrait

Between the graphite and etching projects, I had an easier job of creating a good final project on the graphite. The graphite used pencils such as HB and 2b. This was easier than the etching which I used a stylus to etch off the black to make a pattern as seen below. The etching allowed us to sketch the picture to make the shape more realistic. For the graphite, we needed to use scale and proportion to take the regular picture to the next. The graphite took MUCH more time than the etching because of the level of difficulty and patience. We had to use rulers and certain erasers but for the etching, there was mainly only the stylus. They are similar because they both took a picture and or selfie and converted it to make a cool form of art.

Between the graphite and the etching self portrait, I had a much easier time with the graphite. You can see in my etching that it is hard to see who it is. The graphite was fairly easy because I outlined my entire face first, then started shading. This differs from others because most just did it box by box while I did it all at once. This helped proportion the scale better.

on the etching it was much harder to shade. this was because the only way to shade on the etching was to take off a little more of the black stuff. The graphite was much easier to shade but I fund that it was a lot harder to draw because it was a lot bigger. It was not just tracing you had to make a grid and draw based on the grid. I found that you have to do square by square or you will not be able to get the correct scale.

For both the graphite and the etching I took a picture then made it into a grid. Then on the graphite I lightly sketched the outline, same on the etching. Then on the graphite you had to add shade to it and you could always erase it if you messed up. While on the etching you had to take away the black coating and you could not go back after you shaded. I think that I did better on the etching because I am very bad at blending.

If i wanted the lines to look darker i brought them apart and drew less. For pure white or pure black i filled the part in completely or not at all. When i created the gradient scale for the graphite self portrait i assigned each pencil to a different shade from my posterized photo. For example, if i wanted black i used 6b, if i wanted grey i used 2b, and if i wanted a super light grey i would use an H pencil.

In my graphite self portrait, i created the gradient scale by using different pencils to create an outline of my face then working my way in to my facial features. Then i used my blending stump to blend the values together to make them look more natural. Then, for the etching self portrait i used a stylus to etch away the black to create color. To show a value scale you use different patterns to show the scale like diagonal lines and dots. I think the graphite self portrait was harder because i had to create a bigger value scale and use different pencils

In my graphite self-portrait, I created the gradient scale by using different pencils to make my face while shading to make a value scale. This was different with the etching self-portrait because I needed to make everything shade together in the graphite one but not in the etching self-portrait. And in the etching I used a stylus to scratch away the black and in the graphite I used pencils with different softness.

In my graphite self portrait i showed gradient scale by using different types of graphite pencils using 6b for a dark color/ black and a hb for a lighter color. In the etching self-portrait it was harder to show lighter color being so i had to make lines farther apart and for lighter closer to each other for black no scraping and for white completely removed the black layer. In the graphite self-portrait i could easily make things darker and lighter by erasing and adding more color.

In my graphite self portrait, i created a gradient scale by selecting different graphite pencils. For much of my portrait, i used 4B and 6B for my hair (which is dark). I think it was harder in the etching because making the different gradient scales blend was very hard, while on the self portrait, it was easy to blend, because we had a blending stump but it took much more time.
