The Tiny Seed by Eric Carl

Publisher:Little Simon (2009)
This book tells the story of the journey of a small seed, who despite circumstances is able to overcome and grow into a beautiful flower. The seed watches as other seeds around it are destroyed by their circumstances, yet it remains resilient.

This would be a great book to have, especially for younger children to teach students about staying strong and not giving up no matter what life may throw at them. In the end of the book the once tiny seed is now sending its own seeds off into the world – which I think is a perfect example for our students as to why they should never give up. They are meant to make a difference in this world.

An ideal audience for this book could be a child currently living in the foster care system, or who may have a less than ideal home life.

Publisher: Abrams Books for Young Readers
This book tells the story of a young girl who wants to be an engineer but because she is afraid of failing or what others may think of her inventions she hides them under her bed not allowing anyone else to see them. A family member helps her realize that without failure there is no reward.

This would be a great addition to any elementary classroom library because it teaches students the importance of not giving up on a dream or goal they have because of one failure. Setbacks are a part of life and nothing worth having will come without a few mishaps.

The ideal audience for this book would be a student who constantly lives in fear of failure and not being good enough. There are many students who suffer from anxiety and perfectionism something this book could help them cope with.

Publisher: Tilbury House Publishers (2017)
This book is a heartwarming story about how the media portrays the world and the evil that occurs, most people are actually good people. Children are bombarded with terrible things sometimes and are often taught to fear the world, but there is so much good in it as well.

As a teacher I would love to have this book on my shelf as I help my students understand that despite the terrible things that may be happening in our world, the majority of people they come in contact with are good people. It can help foster the idea that they are safe in the world even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes.

The ideal audience for this book would be a child who has witnessed some terrible things in their life, such as domestic violence or has been abused.

The Invisible String by Patrice Karst

Publisher: Devorss & Co.

This book beautifully portrays the notion that even if one is separated from their loved ones they are still tied together by an invisible string. It explores different types of separations a young child may be faced with such as living away from their parents or death of a family member.

I would love having this book inside my classroom to use a tool for helping a student deal with the loneliness or grief that may come from being separated from their family members. Often these types of feelings are hard to cope with especially for young children so it’s important to give them access to books such as these that can help them understand and deal with their feelings.

The ideal audience for this book would be a child who may live with one parent but the other is not in their life, or who has experienced the death of a close loved one.
