Waring points out that women so often give their time but in exchange for nothing because their labour is invisible. Then, older women experience an even bigger blow when they need to rely on the state, facing shame and financial insecurity. What is the answer? I'd say education - teaching kids to be equal/breaking down patriarchy - but it's not that simple either, is it? I thought Who's Counting was amazing but also so depressing. Everyone should be made to watch it.

Referring to the UNSNA it highlights how anything that has cash value or potential to generate money and that is counted is also destructive. It values war as it generates money, while peace is of no value and the costs of war in terms of disability, death, etc. is not debited; it puts value of natural resources in terms of how much can be extracted, but fails to account for loss of natural habitat, endangered species (and any contribution they make towards livable planet), exploitation of cheap labour, displacement of indigenous population, homelessness, etc. How can we expect the system to tackle women's rights, when their unpaid work has no value in the first place and such a large proportion of world's population is not counted as contributing through reproduction of humanity, childcare, house labour..; how can we expect that it would address destruction of natural resources and climate change, when disasters themselves brings in more money and planet/earth has no value at all (except what can be extracted). I was also inspired by her working as a politician while adhering to principles (Emma Goldman would approve, I suspect) and how she recognised she learns from constituents, people themselves and ecosystem.
