You will need to create a claim about your topic.

You will need to create 3-5 main points/ideas to present in argument form backed with textual evidence.  This evidence can come from any type of media- social, news, advertising, articles, statistics, etc.

Bring 2-3 good open-ended discussion questions you could ask to push the conversation forward during the discussion. Consult good discussion notes from LA class and think about wording them in a way that requires classmates to really think deeply and respond in a significant way that will deepen the group's understanding of the items being discussed. Words like action words (describe, justify, explain, elaborate, etc.) are great ways to promote deeper thinking for discussion. Just because you ask a question, doesn't make it one that pushes the conversation forward, so think strategically.

Consider what others in the discussion may be prepared to say that don't agree with your claim.  Think in advance about 2-3 counterclaims, and bring evidence with you ready to shoot them down/discredit them.

The San Francisco Chronicle did a study recently where  they asked students if they felt they were correctly represented in the media. Instead, the actors are young adults which portrays them differently to the audience. Plus, movies and TV shows in general have been show to incorrectly form stories and ideas about teen life. Many focus on the negative aspects of what very few teens do, rather than the positive. For example, if a teen sees an about a dieting program for teens or something and it seems to portray the teen in a way the makes him/her feel as though they need it and are overweight, they may begin to feel very subconscious about their weight and body image. Subsequently, this can lead to physiological issues as well as self-esteem issues. Many ads can do this, not just diet ads. And while yes, some do, many teens feel that they are still not correctly represented. They feel negatively represented and that some issues presented in "realistic" TV shows about them are over dramatized.
