This presentation is focused on growing my emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence involves understanding how we interact with others and how we interact with ourselves. Goleman (1995) refers to emotional intelligence as what it takes to lead life successfully. Goleman (1995) provides five domains of emotional intelligence that include: knowing one's emotions (self-awareness), managing one's emotions (self-expression), motivating oneself, recognizing emotions in others, and handling relationships. The number of domains that address oneself shows that understanding yourself is critical to building emotional intelligence. The importance of self-understanding has led me to identify two sub-domains that will help grow my emotional intelligence.
In this presentation, I will discuss the impacts of the two sub-domain and provide several strategies that I will use to help improve the current situation. I will also discuss some of the anticipated outcomes from the evolution of my emotional intelligence, at an individual, team and organizational level.

Self-Regard Action Strategy - Self Reflection

My next action step is to address negative self-talk. The company that I work for has recently fully integrated with Microsoft and amongst the features is the ability to designate time for specific things within your calendar. I have now scheduled 20 minutes to dedicate to self-reflection at the end of every day. My EQ360 (2022) report suggests that reflecting on what triggers negative self-talk (stress, intimidation, etc.) can help to mitigate the situation. Stein and Book (2011) further discuss the visualization of situations while paying attention to guttural reactions and internalized emotions, including self-talk. By taking the time each day, I will be able to reflect on situations that have occurred throughout the day and understand any triggers for negative self-talk that may have happened. It is essential to look at the day in its entirety as there may be multiple triggers, albeit small instances, that have led to a specific instance of negative self-talk that holds prominently.

Self-Regard Action Strategy - Self Deprecation

To improve my emotional intelligence, the first part of my action plan is to stop using self-deprecating language in conversation. I need to stop using terms like "I'm an idiot" or "oh, my gosh I am so dumb." I have found that throughout a conversation, I have gotten used to using "well, I am just an operations guy, but…" I am making a conscious effort to stop using self-deprecating language even if it means that I have to restart a conversation. Additionally, I am also using a notebook to write down my reflections and specifically look for instances where I use self-deprecating language.

Goleman et al. (2013) highlight the differentiation between the neocortex and amygdalae when it comes to changing behavioural traits. Training the amygdala takes a significant amount of time and effort, but a concerted effort to stop the self-deprecating talk in the forefront will help drive long-term embedment. The challenge is that I have found that while I am reflecting on the day I often find that negative self-talk will slide into my thoughts.

Assertiveness Action Strategy

The final action strategy involves increasing my assertiveness. Specifically, I need to speak up at meetings. I related to the example in Stein and Book (2011) of Juanita and how she would keep ideas to herself to think about them and then enter them into her computer. My EQ360 (2022) identified an action strategy of preparation that I have already started to use. Preparation before a meeting or discussion is an essential step to help increase assertiveness. Taking the time to prepare for meetings means that I can add to the conversation with confidence. A big part of being confident enough to be assertive will be to work on my ability to attune to a person or group's vision. Goleman et al. (2013) speak to the need to attune vs align, and this is important because simply aligning means that you give up some of your own vision, whereas attuning allows you to gain perspective. Furthermore, I have enlisted the help of a trusted peer to highlight times when I could have been more assertive, particularly in meetings. We have scheduled time on Fridays to review the week and he has now asked that I go through the same exercise with him.

Anticipated Outcomes

On a personal level, an anticipated outcome is that I expect to see an increase in my willingness to take on higher-profile projects and step forward when the opportunity arises, particularly as I embrace my warts (Stein and Book 2011). In addition, being prepared ahead of conversations or meetings will allow me to put myself out there to express myself without the feeling that I am not smart enough or simply wrong. I also anticipate that I will experience improved relationships with friends, family, and professionally.

I have shared my learnings with my team, and through this process, we have started exploring our ideal vision of who we are and what we do. Exploring this ideal vision of the team helps us build a resonant environment. By building our ideal vision, Goleman et al. (2013) state that we can build a tribal sense of belonging, which characterizes places where people like to work.

Organizationally, I see the team's development helping to reduce organizational dissonance, which has been building over the past several years. Goleman et al. (2013) speak to dissonance and some of the effects we see, including a loss of passion, thoughtless compliance, and outright resentment. My team is the only group with touchpoints throughout all business units, so by engaging through emotional intelligence; we can infuse a broader resonant culture.
