In 1962, she traveled to a courthouse in Indianola with 17 other African Americans in order to vote. Only 2 of them got to register before state law enforcement placed the group in jail where they were abused. Hamer also lost her job and home, and then became a community organizer for SNCC to advocate for equal voting rights.
