There are general conventions in any medium,  but conventions are also genre specific. This is important because they give us the information that helps us identify what a genre is. 

Directors and producers like to use conventions to allow the audience to relate more to characters and be able to be more brought into the film and narrative. However, some directors and producers choose to challenge and break the conventions expected of some genres and characters to make their narrative appear more realistic and relatable in situations. The purpose of a title sequence is to attract the target audience and draw them into the film and it's narrative. 

Most title sequences introduce characters either main or small characters as they all hint to the narrative in some way or another and it gives the audience a chance to identify and relate to the characters. The idents or the production and distribution companies are also presented in a title sequence. This is done to help promote the companies and also reflects the quality of the film as if it is distributed by a well-known company, the film is most likely going to be of good quality rather than one distributed by a smaller company. 
This is the same for the titles credits that present the names of the actors and crew as more well-known actors will attract more audience members. These also note to the quality of the film if there are a lot of well-known successful actors are featured.  The sequence may also show the setting of the film and come links to context which may present the era the film is set in and may attract different types of audience members. The setting can also help create a specific atmosphere for a film. The soundtrack used might use both diegetic and non-diegetic sound and this helps draw the audience into the scenes and helps impact the atmosphere and tone of the film. For example, in our title sequence we used a contrast of dark and bright settings to set two different tones; a darker and colder looking room to reflect the mysterious and dark atmosphere and mood of the scenes and the open bright scenes in the market to represent the busy and friendly atmosphere of the setting. The title sequence for 'Gone Girl' is a titles over moving images sequence. This gave the sequence a nice flow and was really easy for the audience to follow through. This is because we wanted to be able to give more information to the audience about the narrative whilst giving the film a more creative look that would engage the audience. This type of sequence leads the audience through the sequence and into the film as they follow the moving images. We used a Futura style font much like the one used in 'Gone Girl' to give the sequence a more professional and sophisticated look to reflect high quality. The camera uses different types of angles such as a lot establishing shots, long shots and a few low angled shots that pan from low to high. This pulls the audience into the setting and location of the film and makes them feel as though they are there and have more of an understanding of the town where it is set and the cold atmosphere as the town is quite empty and dark as it seems to be the early hours of the morning. There aren't many effects used in the editing of the sequence as the shots are quite short and cut quickly from on to the other and don't really transition in a heavily edited format. From the shots you can see that the film is perhaps set in a small American town that has beautiful scenery and must have quite a friendly close-knit community. The lighting is quite dark throughout which hints to the time of day and that it is early morning. But the blue hues in the colouring also reflects quite a cold mood that notes to the thriller genre. 

Our title sequence represented younger social groups and what teenagers often spend their time doing and in our sequence a group of friend's our out shopping. We challenge the convention that the victims in usual thriller and horror films are normally blonde women who are often seen as defenceless. However, in our film we use a group of girls who are from different racial backgrounds and areas. We follow conventions by having mysterious character and using a dark tone that impacts the atmosphere and gives the audience the idea of suspense. I feel that we have been very successful with making our title sequence.
