Intrigued: While reading the book the mystery and the subtle clues help the reader stay intact with the book. The reader becomes very interested and involved in the book trying to figure out the murderer. Throughout the book there are many cliffhangers. You will figure a big hint out and then all of a sudden it will change perspective and you become even more interested to find out about that one cliffhanger. "Hey.' Kris steps aside to let me in... I close my eyes and the world around me fades, like it always does, when I slide my hands into his hair and kiss him back." This is an example of a cliffhanger that the author wrote. They let us know that Cooper is gay and left it at that. They just simply moved onto the next section of the book. As a reader you become curious and want to read further about why Cooper is gay and when did this happen.

In the book One of Us is Lying to by Karen McManus, the author wrote the book in first person limited omniscient. In a scene of the characters in detention Cooper’s point of view is shown “Who gets into a fender bender in the school parking lot?’ he asks… Addy follows her, and I finally unfold myself from my seat.” In this quote it is shown can see that the reader only knows Cooper’s thoughts. Also it says I to show that this is first person but it switches characters. This makes it hard for the viewer to figure out who did it because you can only know a single character's thoughts at a time. You can't tell if someone is lying or telling the truth and you only get in the head of the 4 main characters who didn't seem to do it. All of the other people who could be suspects you can't tell their true emotions

Mysterious- In this book the characters are trying to solve a murder and we are with them for the ride. There is a lot of confusion and unclear details that all link up together at the end. The author's goal was to keep the reader engaged til the end. Little by little some clues were left until the very end when the whole mystery was solved. "Simon always felt like he should get a lot more respect and attention than he did... He started talking about killing himself." This was at the very end when we figured out exactly what happened and who did it. It was really all unknown until that point which makes it a mystery.

Nosey and Apathetic: Simon was always thinking and talking about other people's business. He never cared unless it was something negative where then he would post it publicly. “You tutor Reggie Crawley, don’t you? Wouldn’t you rather know he has a camera in his bedroom”. This shows how nosey Simon is and how he lacks empathy for others

Truth can never be found without a level of trust always comes out. "Simon was poisoned during detention Simon was depressed We're all silent for a long minute, until Bronwyn exhales a small gasp." They finally realize that Simon killed himself. They got to this conclusion by trusting each other that neither of them did it so they canceled out all of them. Which just left Simon and his depressed self which usually leads to one thing, suicide.

Trust: Even displayed with the title, One of us Is Lying the whole book is based on trust and finding out who is lying and who isn't. All four of the main characters hardly know each other before hand but when crucial times come they are able to be confident that all of them didn't lie. "I'm not dealing drugs anymore, and I didn't do anything to Simon... But the thing is that I believe him." In this little scene Bronwyn shows that she trusts Nate and believes that he didn't kill Simon. That makes them one step closer to finding the real killer

Person vs. Society: In the book the main characters face a person vs society conflict. It is them four against the world. The police thinks that they did it together and the media is searching to get them. "I hear the rumors before I see the news vans. Three of them parked out front of the school with reporters and camera crews waiting for last bell to ring." This quote is showing how the atmosphere was in the school. All of the media was waiting to get their story about the murder of Simon Kheller. Whether is was their classmates or families, everyone was against Nate, Addy, Bronwyn, and Cooper.
