We could also say that he is mentally strong because he stayed in the right path in spite of the bad influences of his environnement . He found a job even if it was pretty hard at that time (p.43) .

1) The value of money was pretty low . As we can understand , the price of a coke was around 15¢.
Another exemple would be the fact that Bryon was anxious about not finding 3 dollars to pay off his depts to Charlie .
Nowdays, the cost of life is a lot higher and by that matter of fact we can justify the time that the story took place in.
2) Bryon and Mark go at charlie's bar with him clearly knowing they are underage and Bryon and the majority of the characters smoke cigarettes carelessly. We all know that people in that time didn't know the damage that could cause cigarettes on your body.
