Before stating at addict dance academy I had done a bit of tap with in my previous college. With in tap lessons I find it very difficult to pick up the movements as it take me a while to understand what sounds the feet are suppose to be making. To improve I need to relax my knees more so that my ankles can move a lot more to make the correct sounds. I also need to improve on picking up the phrases a lot quicker so to do this I will pay attention to detail when the teacher first goes through it. I will also attend more tap classes in my free time to help me pick up the movements easier. Another thing to help me improve is to practice the movements more at home each night so that I can move on and work on the new phrases each week.

During the 19th century minstrel shows were seen as a popular entertainment form of comedy for people to watch. A minstrel show was done by a white person who would paint there face with black make up to then imitate what they thought was African Americans through stereotypes as they seen this as comical. They would often go by the names of blackface and tell jokes, sing comical songs and soft shoe dancing. Minstrel shows now will be seen as clear racist however back then the shows became very famous and were enjoyed by many people around the world.

When tap first came around it was only seen done by male dancers however there were a lot of females who were actually quite good at it. At the time you would very rarely see a female tap dancer on tv or in the shows because they were all male dancers. However as the years went on a lot of females started to make an appearance on tv with the males. They also started to create there own way of taping with other females making their own groups.

Now tap is fused with a lot of different other styles as people are still creating to this day forward mixing other styles together and making their own techniques. However people still use the previous practitioners techniques to inspire them even now. A lot of people have taken tap to the next level when creating theory own pieces as they use tap to send a message out to others with social media as the world is always changing and developing. Now because of social media you can also see what is going on in any country so people that tap and create in America can see what people are doing in England. However this could also be a negative thing as there is always people that want to be on top so everyone is always fighting to be the best.

The Nicolas Brothers

The Nicolas brothers were a team that’s danced together for others people entertainment. They were so committed with what they do and creating new tricks to go in there show piece. They became popular very quick as the word spread about the Nicholas brothers spread fast all over. They had very unique abilities of the way they was moving and had gotten their first job on a radio program to then start performing in theatre everywhere. There feet would be moving so fast and the way they moved was so different to what anyone else was doing at the time. They was also very in-sync with each other tapping in unison as they was in time with the music every time and you can hear every beat so clear when they dance. They was seen as entertainment for everyone as the was one of the first black dancers to be shown on tv and in theatres which was a break through for them. It was such a shock for people at first but they show so much talent that it was hard not to watch them. This also encouraged some many more people to try and tap as they show that it doesn’t matter what race you are because they had been so successful that it had inspired others.

Chloe Arnold was a jazz enthusiast and had created her own way of tapping now. She uses tap to direct and send out a message to the world with social media in the 21st century as this has had a big impact on dance now. Thanks to the social media now it is a lot easier to get dance pieces across the world so everyone can see it which has also helped Chloe and her group the syncopated ladies as people have seen there work all over the world. A lot of her pieces are mainly about women empowerment and independent successful women as before you did not see many women tap dancing and making a career out of it. This has also inspired so many more females to tap dance and not be afraid to push themselves even more.
