Our 35th president, John F Kennedy stated, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.” A mere 5 years later, the first Apollo mission was started, only to fail, due to a design flaw in the door. 3 good, brave men died in this event, but their death was not in vain. From the ashes of the Apollo 1, a phoenix rose, inspiring 17 moon missions, with the latter 6 achieving the shining podium of a landing on the moon. To achieve this sparkling goal, 3 people had to die, showing that the first mission was anything but a success. This relates to my boat in more ways than not. Though my boat held only 3 pennies, my design was original and with further tweaking, could be an Apollo 1. It was designed like a raft of sorts, with a small slit opening on top for me to store pennies in, and straw bits off the sides to help support the boat. After a mere 3 pennies in the boat, it submerged, not only due to its poor design, but also due to the small hole in the bottom. This sudden submerging of my boat was tragic, but sparks an inspiration in me. Jesus believes in second chances, as do I. I must forgive the sins I have made by sinking these 3 pennies, but I shall never forget the sacrifices they made for the greater good of humanity. Every night, I hear their voices, as water slowly takes their hold, as their dying breath is uttered for them to say no more. I hear them, scratching at the hollow pit that has taken over my soul, with my conscience riddled with guilt at their loss. No more. I plan to dedicate myself fully, to make my 17 moon missions, and to someday hold hundreds upon hundreds of pennies upon my boat. I yearn to make my boat more buoyant, lighter, and, and works better on floatation. The day that my boat floats, that it does not sink, that my aluminum foil reflects upon the shining light that is the ghost of those 3 pennies I lost that day, I will be content, and that I should be able to die happily. That I should be able to live my life, with a smile on my face, and as I lay upon my deathbed, I address these pennies, and I use my dying breath, and I utter two words. Thank you.
