How did you learn about religious matters?

I grew up being raised Christian until about the age of seven. I have memories of being young going to church, Sunday school, and consuming kid-friendly religious media like books and shows like Veggie Tales. My parents got divorced when I was six and I moved to Utah with my mom. At first, we went to church quite a bit but eventually stopped after about a year. Whenever I would visit my dad, he would take me to church as his side of the family was much more religious but I did not enjoy it. As I grew older, I found that religion wasn't for me and have considered myself an atheist since I knew what the word meant. While religion didn't connect for me, I'm grateful that I got to experience a little bit of it and make a decision for myself.

How were you punished?

I was lucky enough to never be spanked growing up since both of my parents were against it. I remember one situation from when I was about five when my grandmother was babysitting me and she spanked me. My parents got very upset with her and I haven't been spanked since. When I was very young, timeout was the go-to punishment. I would be put in my room or in a corner until I reflected and calmed down. When I got a little older things were taken away from me. For example, I wouldn't be allowed to play with certain toys for a set amount of time or I would lose access to electronics like TV time or my cellphone (when I was older). I've never been grounded in my life and I think that helped me to not rebel. My mom was pretty lenient and understanding so I was able to talk to her and had no need to break rules or rebel. Of course, there would be times where I would disobey, but those punishments were mostly just losing access to my phone or the internet.

If you had siblings of the opposite sex, did you notice different child-rearing practices being followed? What were some of those differences?

I have one brother who is six years younger than me so not only was there a difference in gender but there was a significant age difference as well. We were both raised with traditional gender roles. Luckily, I was a very girly child and it worked out. I loved things like Disney princesses and stuffed animals. My brother was similar and liked things like trucks and superheroes. As the oldest, I definitely took more of a leadership role and felt like I had a lot more responsibility. I remember feeling frustrated when I was young because my brother was always babied and got away with a lot more than I did. I also felt like expectations for me were higher as the oldest and that I always needed to be a positive role model. As my brother got older, I remember certain family members pushing gender norms on my brother. For example, my brother has always been a sweet, sensitive kid, and sometimes when he would cry my dad would tell him to stop being so sensitive and to man up. I was never told these things when I would cry. He was also expected to do all the physical labor like mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, etc. I was never expected to do those things and my chores consisted of doing dishes or cleaning.

Was conflict dealt with in a direct or indirect manner?

Conflict was and still is solved in a more indirect way in my family. Whenever I would fight with my family members, especially my mom, we would just leave each other be until we both got over it and it was never addressed again. Because of this, grudges definitely formed. When we would get into fights later, old things would get brought up and it was a cycle. I don't have many memories of sitting down with my mom, brother, or anyone in my family I've had a conflict with and actually addressed it. Because of this, I struggle with communication and I'm working to get better at it every day. I think when I have my own family, I would want to address conflict in a more direct way and emphasize the importance of communication.

What or who were the subjects of jokes?

Both sides of my family would joke around about pretty much everything. I remember we would all tease each other quite a bit growing up which definitely gave me a thick skin. We were able to joke around with the adults and elders in my family too. My grandma on my mom's side is quite the jokester and would always make fun of us and we would do the same to her. Sometimes our jokes would go a little too far and sometimes certain people, especially the kids, would get upset with the teasing. It would always end okay though and they would tease us right back. My family also had pretty dark humor and could joke around about more sensitive subjects like mental health and death. However, nothing we joked about was offensive towards any minorities or groups of people. I definitely had to watch myself more around my dad's side of the family and couldn't be as open about joking around.
