In this song, the speaker is seen as a male teenager in high school. The occasion is when this teenager is found out to be homosexual. The subject of this song seems to be about accepting others and empathizing for their issues. I believe the main audience are intended to be people with depression and possibly thinking about committing suicide. The purpose of this song is to raise awareness of depression and to let people know that they matter.

The rapper, Logic, uses pathos and ethos in the lyrics and video of "1-800-273-8255" to tell many people with depression that their lives matter and that people want them to be alive. In the video he uses many different emotional appeals to reach the viewer and some explicit lyrics to express the reality of this current world. In the video he uses a story of a boy coming out as gay and how he is being made fun of and becoming depressed. He uses pathos by showing images of the teenager pointing a gun at himself in the video, and also shows the teenager lonely and hungry. He uses ethos because we believe it is wrong to disown your own child but it is shown in the video when the teenager is found to be gay.

Lyrics Analysis- Pathos

The lyrics for this song use pathos very often. Logic tried to be explicit with his lyrics since he realized that his songs can save people's lives. The song starts off with a teenager calling the suicide prevention hotline telling them he has been depressed and that he doesn't want to be alive. This is explaining that he has been feeling down for way too long and thinks that it would be easier to end his life then to try to live through it. The next example of pathos is when the teenager is explaining why he wants to end his life. The lyrics are, "I've been praying for somebody to save me, no one's heroic. And my life don't even matter I know it, I know it, I know i'm hurting deep down but can't show it. I never had a place to call my own, i never had a home." In these lyrics he explains how he feels alone, isolated, and that he doesn't belong. He says that he truly believes that his life doesn't matter, and that he doesn't have anyone that he trusts to tell them how he feels. Shorty after this chorus repeats, The person on the other side of the hotline repeatedly says, "I want you to be alive, You don't gotta die." This is showing that people do care about him being alive, whether he does or doesn't realize it. The next example in the lyrics is when the counselor, which is the person that answers suicide hotline calls, tells him, "seeing the light in the darkest things." In this line, the counselor is telling the teenager to see the positive points in life, even in the darkest times. Personally, I can agree to this because when you try to focus on only the positive things, life becomes much happier and uplifting. Finally, in the end of this song the teenager is tells the counselor, "The lane I travel feels alone, but i'm moving 'til my legs give out." This is implying that he will not give up no matter how hard it gets. This is where Logic is really trying to get the point across that other people go through this too and that anyone can get through depression.

Lyrics Analysis- Ethos

There are several examples used in the lyrics for this song. Logic puts ethics on the line throughout the entire song. Logic had written this song through past experiences and had really touched on all major points of depression. Most people that have went through depression can relate to the lyrics and understand exactly what he is saying to them, through the lyrics. The first example is when he says, "I never had a place to call my own, i never had a home." This relates to Logic when he was a child. Logic grew up in a house with a drug addict father and a mother who often called all of her kids names. He never felt loved as a child and things weren't much better out of the household since he was often bullied. The next example of ethos can be seen throughout the story of the lyrics. In the beginning of the song, the lyrics say that he wants to die. Near the end of the song the lyrics change and say that he finally wants to be alive. I view this as Logic's life story; He was homeless for several years, going from job to job, paycheck to paycheck. Eventually he had decided to just put everything into his efforts for rapping. he had went from having nothing to having a successful life and being able to make a difference in people lives.

In the music video, there is an immense amount of pathos used constantly. Logic wanted people to understand how serious depression can be for people and that it is a real world problem that can't be ignored. The first time pathos can be seen is in the beginning of the video when the young boy is seen growing up with a loving family, but can still be seen playing alone at recess. This is showing examples of feeling alone, even though he is surrounded by people. The next example is around one minute into the video when he is talking to his "friend" at school and can be seen looking at his lips and also seems as if he is completely happy and completed when he is with him for that short amount of time. This is foreshadowing the teenager as being gay since he is very happy with this other boy. The next and most reoccurring visual is the boy seen running in the street, obviously very upset. I analyze this as him trying to run away from reality and his life. Around three minutes into the video, the teenager can be seen walking in the hallways, seemingly in slow-motion. He seems like he is in slow-motion to show how he feels like everyday is a pain and feels like forever. Also, he is the only one in that moment that is in focus, which is portraying that he feels very lonely. The next example of pathos can be seen when the boy is in his room, staring at himself in the mirror, while holding a gun. This is showing that he feels he has went through so much that he believes taking his life would be better than living this life. He is seen having flashbacks of his life before he decides to get help and have a better life. The final example can be seen near the end of the video. Many years have passed and he is finally getting married. The camera pans out to see his father, who at first abandoned his son after finding out he was gay, accepted and loved him.

Logic uses ethos throughout this video since he has lived through depression. Since he had grown up in a fairly broken household and gotten over depression he understands how people with depression feel. The first example of ethos can be seen throughout the middle of the video. In the middle of the video, it can be seen that the teenager does not have any family support and little support from others. Logic can relate to this since his parents did not take love and care for him like a parent should. Also, since he was bullied he can relate to the instances in the video when the teenager is constantly being alone and/or bullied. The other example shown in the music video can be seen between four and five minutes. The teenager is contemplating suicide; he is constantly holding a gun up to his head and crying. Logic is expressing the emotions that can go through a child's head when they are severely depressed. Since he had lived through depression, he has also thought about ending his life.

The lyrics that Logic uses get his thought completely across that he wants people to persevere through depression and stay alive. Logic uses words within his lyrics that can reach someone that has went through depression. Often times he tries tries to use explicit lyrics, for example, when he says, "I just wanna die." He wants the people that hear this song to understand that this is a morbid topic. That this is a serious current world problem. I think that Logic is effective in using pathos and ethos to show depressed teenagers that their lives matter.
