Growing up I never really had an idea of what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to help people. I have always been a rather compassionate person, especially towards those with disabilities. Coming into college I decided to volunteer with a group of disabled children, and that is when I came to the realization that I wanted to work with these types of children. I discovered just how much potential they truly have, and with the right guidance and influences children can be pushed to do incredible things. I truly believe that children are as vulnerable as can be, and because of that they need the best possible parents, teachers, therapists, doctors, and other influential adult figures to look to when they are in need. My support system growing up was nothing short of amazing, and without them I would not have accomplished what I have.Unfortunately, not all children are surrounded by admirable role models, so if I was able to be that one adult in their life that would be enough for me. I believe all children are capable of growing and succeeding, even those with disabilities. Any child who has a disability should always feel included, and acknowledged in a regular classroom setting, and I think all children’s needs should be met. I hope to help these children succeed and flourish within my future career as a Speech Language Pathologist.

John Locke:
- Viewed children as blank slates
- stressed the individuality of children
- environment shapes children
- valued first hand experiences of learning.
- With the children that I encounter I will keep this belief, and focus my energy on enhancing the children's knowledge. I hope to help expand their minds and show the potential that they have.

Jean Rousseau:
- Development unfolds through exploration
- Allow children to mature at their own rate
- Children are good
- Children learn in stages
- Through my program I want to help the children explore and learn about themselves and their strengths. I will not judge a child based on what anyone says, and I will see them as nothing but good. Of course I will have a schedule for each child, but I will not push them too hard, and I will allow them to move at their own pace.

John Dewey
-Believed education should emerge from children’s interests & align with their development
-Advocated experiential and integrated curriculum
-Valued play and children taking an active role in learning
-When working with my patients I plan on incorporating what they enjoy and heat their interests are in order to keep them intrigued. I never want the children to feel like they are doing boring thing, but instead I want them to feel like my programs are full of games and fun.

Educational Practices

In my practice I want to push children to be creative and take matters into their own hands. I want them to discover who they are, what their strengths are, and what they enjoy. There will always be an outline of what I need from them, and I will always push them to improve, but my hopes are for them to do it all on their own, and for me to be just a guide to them. The following educational practices are the ones I believe will help me out with this the most.

Montessori:
It is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child.

Project Approach:
Refers to a set of teaching strategies that enable teachers to guide students through in-depth studies of real-world topics. Projects have a complex but flexible framework within which teaching and learning are seen as interactive processes. When teachers implement the Approach successfully, students feel highly motivated and actively involved in their own learning, leading them to produce high-quality work and to grow as individuals and collaborators

Reggio Emilia:
An innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education which values the child as strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge. Every child brings with them deep curiosity and potential and this innate curiosity drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it.

I want to be a support system for both the children and the parents. Being that the child is going through speech therapy the family must have some concerns. I want to work with the family and the child every step of the way and be completely transparent with all of them. I hope to be someone they all can confide in and ask about any concerns they have or any information they want to know. I want both the child and their family to feel like they are able to trust me and count on me.

Theories of Development

Multiple Intelligence Theory:
This theory was brought into play by Howard Gardner. The idea of it is that people are smart in different ways, and he has identified 8 different intelligences that people can possibly have. With my practice I plan to help the children figure out their intelligences in order to use them in hopes to benefit the child. I believe that it is important to help a child become aware of their different intelligences because not only can it help improve their speech but it can also can be utilized in different aspects of their life.

Ecological Systems Theory:
This theory, by Bronfenbrenner, states that both the environment and biology affect a child's development, and that development occurs within varied systems of the environment. My hopes are to try a connect with the children and learn about their different environments. If I connect to a child on a personal level I feel as if they will trust me more, and as a result be more willing to allow me to help them. Depending on the severity of the child, connecting to parts of their environment like their family could also be very beneficial.

Social Learning:
Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory states that people learn from one another through observation, imitation, and modeling. It encompasses attention, memory, and motivation, and this in my field could be extremely beneficial. While working with groups children would be able to watch each other and catch onto the exercises easier.

Five years ago I was blessed with a beautiful baby cousin. As he started to age the adults were concerned with his lack of babble, and soon with his lack of words. It wasn't until the age of 4 that he was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. I saw him go from one speech therapist to the next, unhappy with them all. He would throw tantrums and do everything in his power to not do anything, until one day around the age of 3 he was introduced to one therapist that changed him. She was calm and patient and she had something about her that he just adored. He has been going to her for about 2 years now and has improved tremendously. She has a relationship with not only him but with his parents as well, and he actually gets excited to go to their appointments. The impact she has made on their life is truly incredible. I knew I wanted to work with disabled children, but I didn't quite know how I was going to do so. I have heard about this Speech Therapist for the past couple of years, but it wasn't until 6 months ago that I was able to sit in on one of their lessons, and this is when I fell in love with the profession.
