Broken Promises

"But he never got around to that either, and as Brian and I watched, the hole for the Glass Castle's foundation slowly filled with garbage."

This picture of the crumbled up paper with the word promises is reflective of the time when Rex, Brian, and Jeannette were spending their time working on the foundation of the Glass Castle. Rex decided that since he couldn't afford to pay the town's trash-collection fee that he was just going to dump garbage in the foundation. This is a perfect example of Broken Promises because it's basically Rex implying that the Glass Castle was built of broken promises that Rex himself never kept. It was basically trash to him and never truly meant anything. This is a let down to the children because that's when they realized they weren't ever going to build the Glass Castle like their father had always mentioned. The picture perfectly fits in with this because the crumbled up paper with the word promises is like if it were trash, it means nothing.

Heartbreak

"Have I ever let you down?" Dad asked. I'd heard that question at least two hundred times, and I'd always answered it the way I knew he wanted me to because I thought it was faith in Dad that had kept him going all those years.

This picture of the two people hugging is reflective of the time when Rex asked Jeannette the same question he's asked her many times throughout her life. Every time Rex did something it ended up breaking his family even more. Jeannette realized what Rex did and although it affected her so much and broke her heart over and over she knew she could never truly hate him. In the picture the person shinning bright is Rex, him thinking that all these years he's never let down Jeannette. And the person shaded in black is Jeannette having to live with the fact that she can't tell Rex that he's let her down all these years. Any time he asks her that question all the times of how he's let her down come flowing in her mind. She just has to act like everything's good and that he's never done anything wrong. This is a perfect example of Heartbreak because no matter how badly Rex hurt and broke Jeannette she knew she could never truly tell him that all these years he did let her down. She knew that it would break him knowing that he let down his own daughter all these years. He was her first heartbreak, her father letting her down all these years.

Abuse (Neglect)

“I wanted to tell them that Dad had been gone for days, that Mom had been sleeping on the couch for weeks, that I was hungry and scared and didn’t know what to do.”

The picture of the girl feeling like she's all alone and doesn't know what to do is reflective of the time when Jeannette wanted to tell someone that their father was gone and their mother had been sleeping on the couch and how she had been hungry. The girl if imagined is like Jeannette just a young girl having to deal with all these problems at such a young age. Feeling like she doesn't have anyone to talk to about these things and not knowing that she's being neglected and emotionally abused. This is a perfect example of Abuse (Neglect) because it shows the abuse and emotional neglect that not only Jeannette went through but her siblings too. They suffered at the hands of their own parents. One being her father's lack of absence and him being an alcoholic. The other one being her mom's lack of responsibility, her showing that she was careless.

As talked in Jeannettes memoir she talks about how her whole childhood her and her siblings were all shown abuse and neglected. They weren't ever shown any nurture from their parents, teachers, friends, nor other family members.

Poverty

"We were always doing the skedaddle, usually in the middle of the night."

This picture of the family packing up everything in the middle of the night is reflective of the time when Jeannette was talking about how her and her family would always leave from where ever they were staying. She explains how she would overhear her parents discussing how there were people after them and how they needed to pack up everything and move away. The picture perfectly fits in with the quote because it gives an idea of how the family would skedaddle away in the middle of the night. And how they would often fled from places without paying rent and avoid responsibilities. This emphasizes their transparent and unstable life due to financial hardship. This is a perfect example of Poverty because it shows how the Walls' family refuses getting any governmental help. Doesn't matter if they were suffering and starving they never thought of getting help. It shows how careless both Rex and Rose Mary were they knew they had children to take care of yet they never wanted to get any help to make their lives easier.

Fantasy vs. Reality

"He carried around the blueprints for the glass castle wherever we went, and sometimes he'd pull them out and let us work on the design for our rooms. All we had to do was find gold, Dad said, and we were on the verge of that. Once he finished the prospector and we struck it rich, he'd start work on our Glass."

The picture of the blueprint of a Castle is reflective of the time when Jeannette talked about how Rex would carry around blueprints of the Glass Castle and talk about how he was going to work on it. Rex had always dreamed big for his family, he always wanted a better future for them. The picture reflects the blueprints of the castle they'll never have. This is a perfect example of Fantasy vs. Reality because Rex always carried around blueprints of the castle and talked about it but in reality they were always struggling financially and could barely have any basic necessities. He always dreamed big but he really barely had anything.

Unconditional Love

"Years from now when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten dad said you'll still have your stars."

The picture of the thousands of stars is reflective of the time when Rex "gifted" Jeannette stars for Christmas. He gifted her stars but instead she picks a planet, she picks Venus. Rex tells her that while all the other kids get cheap and gifts that have no meaning. She gets the best gift that's ever lasting. Rex was emphasizing the importance of prioritizing experiences over material. Rex tries to show his love and appreciation for his children and teach them that it’s not conditional. This is a perfect example of unconditional love because Rex highlights the stars as something that’ll last forever. Meaning that his love for his children is forever lasting.
