(1) The first thing you want to do is make activated charcoal.
--> This is because most charcoal found at stores is not pure and could leach chemical contaminants into the water, which is the opposite of what you want to do when making a water filter! Make the activated charcoal out of hardwood found in the wilderness in survival situations. Crush the activated charcoal into powder.
(2) Secondly, you must rinse your activated charcoal.
--> Rinse to remove any contamination on the surface. Let it dry on a paper.
(3) Next, it is time to create your filter vessel. Often, survival charcoal water filters are made from 2-liter plastic bottles.
(4) Debris, algae, etc. can clog the top layer of charcoal, so it is important to make a layered filter.
--> You can use media such as gravel and sand.
(5) After that, layer your filter media!
--> The order of this filter layer is from bottom to top:
1. Tight-knit cloth or coffee filter (stops any charcoal pieces from getting into water collection vessel.)
2. The activated charcoal (absorbs chemical impurities from water)
3. Sand (or smashed-up brick pieces)
4. Small pebbles (filters out larger pieces of debris)
5. Larger pebbles (or grass) (catches larger pieces of debris in water)
(6) Finally, pour water into the filter and watch as the "gravity filter" (it will take awhile) kills the pathogens and impurities in the water!
--> Further treat the water from the charcoal filter by boiling, household bleaching, or using water purification tablets.
(Source: https://www.primalsurvivor.net/diy-charcoal-water-filter/)
