We follow a girl as she goes door to door looking for her brother. Each neighbor invited her inside to join them for dinner. She noticed that even though all of her neighbors came from different countries they were all eating rice, just with a slightly different twist from the others.
This book is good to showcase that even though we may all come from different background we all love to eat!
A great activity for this book would be to have each student bring in a rice dish that their family makes, or maybe have each student pick a country to make a rice dish from, and we can have a putlock lunch.

Celebrating the diverse population of the Hawaiian islands, this book follows a girl making dumplings for New Year. Throughout the book we learn about the food, customs, and language that is represented in Hawaii. In this book, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Haole, and Hawaiian are all represented. This book can be a great platform to dive into Asian cultures, by introducing them in a small amount and how they all fit together in Hawaii, before going to other texts that are about a specific Asian culture. Alternately it can be used to end a unit of Asian culture by showing how even though they are all different and come from different backgrounds, they all meet together in Hawaii.

A family visits a Dim Sum restaurant, where they share small dishes with each other. The author explains what these dishes are, and also how this tradition came to be. Many families go out to eat, this book is a good way to show that even though another culture may also go out to eat, there are different customs and different ways of doing the same thing.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A PALETA?

We see a girl wait for the Paleta wagon as she describes the sights and scents of her neighborhood. Once she gets her Popsicle she lists all of the possible uses for it, finally telling us what her favorite use is. This book is great in that it draws parallels to the ice cream truck, while pointing out the different surroundings. However, children might find some parts of the book confusing as some words are in Spanish. A great activity with this book would be to have students paint themselves with ice cream from the ice cream truck, so they can think about what they do with a Paleta.

During a neighborhood block party all the neighbors bring food. The neighbors are all from different cultures, yet they all brought noodles to the party! This book shows that even if you come from a different background from somebody, there are still huge similarities in your traditions and the kinds of food that you eat. They might not all be exactly the same, but they are close. For example, Lo Mein, and Spaghetti are two very different dishes, however they are both made with long thin noodles with a sauce on it, and they are both delicious!
