I just realized how many steps there are in sociology research. There are 6. It's super important to pick a topic in sociology, but when you pick one in sociology, it should be the one that matters. If you pick one that you are passionate about it can help you have more meaningful research. It helps with focusing on the research, but if we need to be broad enough, we may miss out on bigger issues. Literature reviews are great to help you catch up on what’s already been said, but if you only focus on what’s already been said, you may end up getting boxed in. A hypothesis helps you steer, but you still have to be able to switch courses and learn unexpected things. There is no one best research method and each has pros and cons, and combining research methods can give you a more complete picture. Finally, ethics should be followed when collecting data because we don’t want to disrespect the people we are studying. In this chapter, they talked about how interview bias can cause the respondent to have biased answers. What’s super important to know in the community you’re studying is that you’re results can change, or be impacted by what’s going on. This also means you won’t just push your own opinions and are aware of your own biases to stay open-minded.

The reality of hiring convicts, one thing she found was that white applicants with a criminal record received more calls back than Black applicants without a criminal record. It really shows how unfair the job market can be, where if people have a felony it really hurts their chances. But it's one more type of bias. It’s crazy to think a white guy with a record stands a better chance than a Black guy with a clean criminal record just because of the color of his skin. However, this makes me wonder about all of the people out there who are knowledgeable but are turned away simply because of these prejudices. So that is just how deep in our society these biases really are. This chapter taught me that while numbers are fun to look at, it is not the point, but the people behind the numbers. But these biases don’t only hurt individuals; they actually hinder whole communities from gaining and prospering. It isn’t fair for qualified people to get passed over just because of their race, and when this happens it perpetuates stereotypes, it stops people from succeeding as a whole. At the same time, today, jobs are so hard to find just so and to know some people aren’t getting hired just because they look like that is horrible. This relates to me because my friend is black and she gets stereotyped all the time and it was really hard for her to find a job. She applied to a lot of places when she went in person they told her they were not hiring and to apply online but she never heard back even though she had good references on her resume and graduated high school. But when I went in person to the same place they gave me a resume and told me I would be a good worker even though I had never worked before. Eventually, she got a job at a fast food place but it made me feel bad for her since she was judged and treated badly.
