a new research center shows how we can combine hydrogen, solar power, gas turbines and renewable energy storage to build flexible, zero-carbon energy systems.

An extension of the Siemens Energy gas turbine test facility in Finspång, the center uses solar power and excess energy from the testing to produce hydrogen. That hydrogen is then used in turn to power the gas turbines tests, creating a closed-loop energy system that, when scaled up for industrial parks or communities, would release zero carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

We show how hydrogen and gas turbines can be combined with renewables to achieve a sustainable energy system.”

This is how it  works: Using electricity from the solar panels and excess power from gas turbine tests to run the electrolyzer, water is separated into oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is then compressed, stored in storage tanks and coupled to the gas turbine test center.

We’ve installed renewable energy systems with a combined total capacity of 5.5 megawatts on all permanent building projects across the Expo site. That’s enough energy to go approximately 180,000 round trips from Downtown Dubai to the Corniche in Abu Dhabi! 

The 4,912 solar panels on Terra – the Sustainability Pavilion’s 130-metre wide canopy and 18 Energy Trees – help.

The building is powered by 4,000 Mega Watts of electricity produced through solar energy by a new station connected to the Museum. The station was built in collaboration with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), making the Museum upon completion.
