Stories either involving a main child character affecting other people or physical stories involving only physical objects were read aloud to participants. Two of the stories were known as pro-social and involved a child intentionally carrying out a good deed. The other two stories were known as anti-social and involved a child intentionally carrying out a bad deed. At the end of each 4 stories the child was asked by a teacher who had carried out the deed. In two of the stories the character lied and in the others they told the truth.

The children were then shown a 7 point rating chart which contained the following ratings: very very good (3 red stars), very good (2 red stars), good (1 red star), niether good or naughty (blue circle), naughty (1 black cross), very naughty (2 black crosses) and very very naughty (3 black crosses).

After the chart was exlained, the stories were read aloud to indiviaduals in a pre-arranged random order. They were read in the participants own language and presented alongside illustrations. After the deed section was read, the children were asked "was what he (or she) did good or naughty?". The child could respond verbally or non-verbally or both using the rating scale. The question was repeated after the 2nd part of the story (lie or truth-telling) was read. The interviewer systematically alternated the words 'good' and 'naughty' in the questions.

The children's responses were converted into a points score (e.g. 3 = very, very good, 0 = not good or naughty, -3 = very, very naughty). The two groups were similar in negative ratings of lying in anti-social situations and their positive ratings in truth-telling.

70% of Chinese 11 year old children rated lying positively in pro-social situations, compared to just 25% of Canadian children. - suggests Chinese are taught values of self-effacement and modesty and this may affect their moral reasoning as they age.
