Students can use generative AI to simply create prewritten essays and submit them as their own work, bypassing the creative and critical thinking processes that we are trying to teach.

The same, basic, obvious concerns everyone has. Students are human, thus innately lazy, dishonest, and keen to cheat. Even if they are not looking to cheat, AI allows an easier, faster, 'time-saving' method of working. Why is this something to promote?

thinking automation can fully replace a caring teacher’s willingness to sit next to students, work with them, help them, encourage them, and from years of teaching experience know what that individual student needs to be successful. Automation is great, but so are teachers!

I think my principal concern is the loss of meaning. As an SLS and Communication instructor, meaning is at the root of everything we do. It’s not just about public speaking, for instance, but the meaning of what we’re saying. It’s not just finding a job or drafting a budget, but the meaning behind that— why does it matter? What role does it play in my life?

While I maintain there are several noteworthy applications with AI, my ideal has always been AI and technology as means to reduce the need for meaningless labor. When it’s taking over the role of what really matters, I feel disheartened.
