Bartolomeu Dias reaches the cape of good hope in 1488 after a sixteen month travel. Bartolomeo Dias was born in Portugal in 1450 and died in cape town in 1500.

Portugal claims Brazil through the treaty of tordesillias which splits Spain and Portugals taking of the new world. This was very important because if this treaty did not exists there would be a war bigger than needed.
