The media largely interpreted and declared Tet as a US military defeat. 16 This resonated harshly in an American population becoming increasingly weary of the mounting casualties in Vietnam. The view of many historians is that Tet was the turning point of American public opinion, and our total involvement in Vietnam. Shortly after Tet, President Johnson began telling General Westmoreland that any attempt to pursue the war more aggressively was “politically unfeasible”. Mike Wallace, reporting on CBS, stated that “the Tet offensive had demolished the myth that allied strength controlled South Vietnam”, while the New York Times printed, “These are not the deeds of an enemy whose fighting efficiency has `progressively declined' and whose morale is `sinking fast,' as United States military officials put it in November”.

The movement against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War began small–among peace activists and leftist intellectuals on college campuses–but gained national prominence in 1965, after the United States began bombing North Vietnam in earnest. Anti-war marches and other protests, such as the ones organized by Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), attracted a widening base of support over the next three years, peaking in early 1968 after the successful Tet Offensive by North Vietnamese troops proved that war’s end was nowhere in sight.

The war has an influence on nearly everyone. Its effects on the physical landscape are clear, from the devastating impact of Agent Orange on the country’s fields to the still-visible bomb craters and, more significantly, the thousands of landmines that still lie undiscovered. The Vietnamese Communist Party leadership still seem to be preoccupied by the conflict and school children are routinely shown war museums and Ho Chi Minh memorials. But despite the continuing propaganda offensive, people harbour surprisingly little animosity towards America or the West. Indeed, of all Westerners, it is often Americans who are most warmly welcomed, particularly in the south.
