the music video essentially follows a message of the actual song. it is about a boy who is seen to have supernatural powers and it looked upon as an outcast and abnormal. this then leads to authorities such as the police and army chasing after him to catch him. eventually they do catch him but the boy bursts with light from within him and blows the army away.

this music video addresses social issues including conflict between authorities and the youth, bullying, the education system and abandonment.
it does this by using portraying the different social groups: youth, police, women, army and teachers.
the music video as whole connotes that society has an inability to accept differences amongst individuals.
it could also be interpreted that america (the country this music video is set in) may limit dreams and/or stop people from being too powerful as you are seen as a danger to the government and the country which heavily contradicts the "american dream".

(Culture) this music video is an unconventional video as the artists, David Guetta and Sia, do not appear in the video and the music video seems to be filmed more like an actual film.
(cultural traits) there is a feeling of the 80s/90s time period in a suburban american town. this is done through colour grading and props such as older cars, the popularity of the bike and the old television in the house.
(intertextual references) E.T., goonies, Stranger Things, Super8.
(cultural behaviours) include the youth escaping police and authorities. the element of supernatural behaviour and powers.

camera: extreme close-up of hair and fingers = creates confusion as an opening scene building intrigue for the audience to continue watching.
shallow focus = draws attention to the main character filtering out the background. could even connote the powerful mindset of the boy who is only taking interest for his safety and him being the frontline.

editing: jump cut to the tempo = this connects the song to the video and there is a great emphasis of escape through the fast cutting pace during the bike scene.
CGI of ending scene = conveys the supernatural powers of the boy and his powers as a sign of rebellion and strength.

mise-en-scene: turn down american school (location) = connotes the social issue of the education system.
mixture of high key and low key (lighting) = especially the ending scene in the forest the low key lighting symbolises the end of the boy and hopelessness until he blasts his own bright light creating a powerful contrasting light effect connoting rebellion.
retro tv (props) = portrays the 80s theme and when television started to become mainstream, adds to the reality side of the music video.

(artist) neither Sia and David Guetta are explicitly represented in the music video due to their absence. them both not appearing in the video can imply they already are worldwide known and respected artists many people would not need a visual representation of them to identify the song and who its by. not to mention Sia's brand consists of her never showing her full face whether if it is in her music videos or whilst performing live as she believes her vocals should be payed attention to and not her image or how an artist looks like. however David Guetta is in the music video on a poster as a drawing designed by someone in the school also suggesting he is widely known even back in the 80s or 90s.
(social groups)
main character: represents youth and outcasts and being different in society. in the music video he is portrayed to cause chaos and to be perceived as a threat to society but is represented as hopeful and powerful to the audience, almost an inspirational character.
teacher: this represents the adults and slightly older generation compared to the youth. a common stereotype of this age group fearing the youth and wanting more control over them is present. it also connotes the feeling of 'damsels in distress' as it is a female teacher calling the police (also relating to the older time period where it was common for many women to rely on men in society for comfort and structure).
army: represents high authority and government and social/political power. there is a negative representation made to the audience of the army. they are chasing a young boy with guns and full force (addressing the situation badly). this could even be representing social problems that in some cases the police force, especially in america, may have a role in - police brutality. this links to abuse of power and the prejudice that may be highly present and toxic in many societies where many of us struggle accepting differences.
