I think students violate guideline number 8 the most, which states "thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output" (CPRS, 2011). Students use the internet to cheat on homework, exams and essays. Many students copy the intellectual property of others on the internet when completing school work.

This misconduct is sometimes done on purpose while other times its a complete accident. Students look up answers on homework and copy the ideas of others becuase it is easier and less time consuming than doing it on their own. However, most plagiarism is a form of accidental cheating. When writing an essay, students will paraphrase without giving the original author credit. Most of the time they don't mean to do this but don't know how to cite their sources.

For the case of purposeful plagiarism, students should know the consequences and be disiplined if they cheat. This will reduce the number of students who engage in cheating because of the repercussions. Plagiarism detection software is another development to help eliminate cheating.

For the case of accidental plagiarism, students should be taught how to properly cite their sources. Most students are truly unaware of citation formats. Each grade level should give students a refresher course on how to cite. The way to eliminate citation mistakes and accidental plagiarism is through teaching.
