After completing the assessment, it is time to interpret the data so that the information can best be used within your classroom.
To begin to interpret the data:

First, score the data this means noting the type of text (Fiction or Nonfiction), the level of the text, accuracy, comprehension, if the text result in frustration, instructional, or independent leveling, the self-correction rate, and fluency scoring. This combines all of the data and makes it readily available.

Next, note the types of errors that the student consistently exhibited whether visual, syntactic, or meaning based

Accuracy, fluency, and self-correction rate can be calculated by using page 27

The interpreting of the data begins with an analysis of behavior such as early reading behavior, evaluating the reasoning for errors, solving strategies used by the student, and self-correction. Fountas and Pinnell offers questions to ask yourself as a teacher to help determine why each of these occur (p. 31).

Once you have gathered this data you can consider your students strengths and weaknesses and pinpoint how best to help you student succeed as a reader

This can also help you to determine instructional strategies to use with the student and texts that relate to their level

You can also interpret the kind of errors that they were making and determine focus areas for future lessons

Page 22-35 of this article gives a great case study of how to interpret and utilize the information gathered while using Fountas and Pinnell (You can click on the image and it will take you to the document)("Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment," 2015, p. 22-35).

The framework used to attempt to raise students tests scores who have "reading challenges" is RTI. This is considered a misuse in terms of the motivation to help students develop stronger reading ability (Craft, 2014, p. 4).
