Anti-LGBTQIA+ Policies

This article details a lot of policies that passed under the last Trump administrations that actively harmed the queer community. I'm using this passage to educate others on history, and how to avoid this sort of thing to pass again in the extent it did. And if they do, how to mitigate damages in one's own communities.

Celebrating These Historic Victories for LGBTQ+ Politicians

This is such an important win for the queer community. We forget so often that it isn't totally bleak, just very hard to fathom any goodness when our world seems to be falling around us. It isn't the end of the world. Every year, more and more of our community is welcomed into power, and eventually this won't be a thing to celebrate but just be a norm in our country. But for now, these people are there to make changes that boost us forward.

Queer Rep in US Politics

Having representation, no matter how small, is how ripples start to be made. For example, Danica Roem being elected to be part of the Virginia House of Delegates back in 2017 who was the first openly transgender person in any legislature made it so more citizens might welcome more transgender leaders in politics, and that other queer people may run as well. All these new moments lead to a safer and more inclusive space in Congress.

Why is the Community Afraid?

In order to find hope, we have to understand why we're afraid in the first place. We have to dismantle our fears and face them in order to conquer them. And for those who are able to make an active, conquering change, it's important to know how to help oneself and make sure we're able to stay afloat. All information is good information, and once we've processed our terror, we can transfer it into something more productive for ourselves and our community. Togetherness is the most important thing right now.

Main Idea

My main idea is how to maintain hope in this hopeless political environment. It's terrifying, quite frankly. To be anyone who's 'different' in this society, especially now with the presidential elections having ended the way it did, it's even more dangerous to be someone who stands out. On top of that, people often don't know how to be, act, or mitigate their fear. Or if they want to take action, people often don't know where to start. I want to begin scratching the surfaces of possibilities while also educating on why the climate is the way it is, but also highlight sources of hope so we can continue to move forward and tend to our community because we deserve to thrive.

I'll be writing a Manifesto, speaking to the queer community about how it's necessary to remain hopeful and to turn our anger and fear into something productive.
