I used p.e. when my students were 6.
To learn that the numbers can increase, but also decrease, we went to the gym, and we ran a path with steps and jumps and slips ... then we repeated backwards. Then my pupils walked on a "street" where each step corresponds to a number. And they have traveled back and forth. Here we learned to do addition and subtraction.
It was not exactly a dance, but ... :)

Dance and math it is really nice combination. I teach also P.E. and many time we do math in Gym, because it is much more easier to understand math concept by moving, touching, manipulating. This lesson has moved me to go deeper in this subject and this is what I found out:

When you create a dance and you want other to do it exactly in the same way, you have to code each movement and to write down the choreography in a procedure made of symbols (just like math does, translate something in a procedure or in equation) Rudolf Laban (1879-1958) spent his life on this pourpose [he’s considered “the first” Choreologist].

Few years ago I prepared, with my kids of my second primary class, a song and a dance in order to learn the six time table. I found the song on youtube, but the ballet gestures were invented by the children. Finally, after many trials, they wanted to present the ballet to their parents: it had been very rewarding for them ... and in addition they learned the six time table without difficulty!

- Coreografed dances (traditional dances are very rich on that!) are great to explore FIGURES and LINES on their space design, and TRANLATIONS, REFLEXIONS and ROTATIONS on their displacments.
- Rhythm and foot work (related to music bars) is COUNTING and FRACTION knowlegd (like in music-maths relation).
- Diferent movement qualities can be suggested when thinking in DOT, LINE, PLANE or SPACE.
- Grouping and circular counting is a way to analyse DIVISORS, REMINDERS, MULTIPLES and PRIME NUMBERS.

I search on Google and I find this site: http://www.symmetrymovie.com/. We could see in classroom with students. In a succesive debate we can talk about dance, maths (simmetry) and physics (CERN). I have another idea too: I think that we could make a game (similar to musical chairs). Students can move or dance freely (with a lot of entropy) but when music stops they must create togheter simmetrical pattern (the teacher can indicate which patter, for example bilater pattern, reducing entropy). This game can help creativity of students and show them that maths can be funny.

Dance movements may be all sorts of combinations of circles and lines (geometry !!!) concludes our bodies moving through space and circle. So there are lots of ways that we can physically experience (or watch) geometry. A dancing person can use her body to create forms, or can be placed on a floor in a special type (line or circle, for example). And when you add more dancers, possible relationships are endless: remember lines that are tangent to the circle? It is easy to imagine these two dancers outlining shapes, or moving these models in a room.

Last year in my first grade class (6 years old) I made an activity of coding unplugged. The kids listen to a simple music. Then, in group, they compose a strip of code putting on the floor the directional arrows (left, right, forwards and back). They have to learn the dance.

I never thought that dance could be so effective to teach. It is awesome to discover that we can use our body and our movements to experience and learn patterns. However it is no easy to implement the dance in the teaching, but i think it worth, especially to teach statistic.

I like the idea of dance to create a pattern to use for Sequences and Patterns. That would create an enjoyable experience for my students and it would give them an opportunity to be spontaneous and creative. An opportunity to stimulate their brains.
