Toby and his mother move into a converted attic in a small, musty boarding house in West Seattle. In the evenings, they go for walks and fantasize about buying the most beautiful houses on the block. They thumb their noses at rundown houses, even though living in a rundown house that they own would be better than where they live. So, they decide to rent a house with Marian and Kathy.

Phil owns the boarding house. Phil does not like kids and only allows Toby to live there, because Toby's mother promises that Toby will not bring other kids around. Phil is badly burned from a warehouse fire. Toby assumes Phil does not like him, but Phil makes a point of touching Toby every time he walks by. Toby believes Phil does this to make himself feel worse.

On the other hand, Jack and his friends break the windows of their school cafeteria, but fortunately they are never discovered and becoming more derelict.

After months later, both Marian and Kathy are going to get married. Marian keep trying to fix Rosemary up with a man, and after some short-time romances, Rosemary meet Dwight. Anyway, Jack does not like Dwight at all. He makes fun of him " tried too hard" to run after Rosemary and comically mimics Dwight's behavior.

I think Rosemary is too easy to trust a man, so that she has been hurt by many different men. Also, this makes her always change the places to live and to a certain extent, it makes a bad influence on Jack.

Rosemary's temper is too mild.Even when Jack has made some troubles with his friends and criticized by the others, Rosemary cannot bear to reprimand him."She’d never been able to spank me. The few times she tried I [Jack] came away laughing. She couldn’t even raise her voice convincingly. That wasn’t the way she wanted to be with me, and she didn’t think I [Jack] needed it anyway."

The reason why Rosemary cannot reprimand Jack is that she had suffered a lot from her daddy when she was a child, and she does not want to treat Jack like that. "Her father, Daddy, had given her plenty and she had yet to see the profit from it. "

However, although Rosemary tries her best to treat her child gently, she is still attracted by the men who use violent to show thier power."Daddy left some marks on her. One of them was a strange docility, almost paralysis, with men of the tyrant breed."

Jack and Rosemary spend Thanksgiving day in Chinook with Dwight and his three children, Norma, Skipper and Pearl. Jack dose not like the youngest girl named Pearl, but keeps looking up at Norma except he is asleep. Because the house has no more empty room, so Jack and Rosemary share one sofa bed that night. Anyway, Rosemary cannot settle down becuase she is confused about wether she should marry Dwight or not and Jack gives a suggestion to her, later would be fine.

The next day, Dwight pack everyone into the car and drives them around Chinook which is bleak and just a few people live in. When Norma complains that the villiage is isolated, Dwight tries to say something plausible to refute and teach Norma in oder to make a deep impression on Rosemary.

The biggest reason that Jack would like to spend Thankgiving in Chinook is Dwight mentions the rifle club is gping to hold a turkey shoot and he promises Jack that he would be able to join. Jack looks forward to the turkey shoot and feels disappointed when Dwight tells him the event is only for adults. However, Dwight uses the rifle which is Roy gave to Jack, then gets a really bad score, and he complains about the rifle so much. Rosemary is the only one woman participate in the turkey shoot and she wins the game with the excellent score. After that, Dwight is jealous of her superiority and bacomes stiff and awkward when he gets home.

Dwight drives Jack and Rosemary back to Seattle early the next morning.

Dwight is one of the suitors for Rosemary. He is a short man with curly brown hair and sad , restless brown eyes. Also, he gives Rosemary a feel that he is a nice man, very considerate. Dwight tries too hard to impress Rosemary, he keeps driving down the mountains to see Rosemary and tries his best to act as a gentleman and helps everyone to do the tiny things.
"Nobody could just go to the kitchen and make a drink, Dwight had to jump up and do it himself. Nobodu could open a door or put on a coat without his help. The could not even smoke their own cigarettes, they had to take one of Dwight's.."

Of course, all is he pretends to be. He is a selfish, simulated and petty man. When he gets a low score of the turkey shoot, he even complains about the rifle instead of thinking about his skill. He does not admit his fail which makes him lose face.
" 'That thing is a manace. You ought to get rid of it. It shoots wild.' He added,'The bore is probably rusted out.' "
Dwight is jealous of Rosemary after she won the turkey shoot.
"Dwight pulled away fast and frove straight back to the house, where he clomped down the hall to his room and closed the door behind him."
"Dwight stiff and awkward."
