As a leader, and as an authentic person, I want to grow my ability to connect and communicate with the people in my life. The tools that I will use to help me achieve this will be based on Brene Brown's work: using small moments to build trust, being open and vulnerable, and being brave enough to have difficult conversations, productively.

When something that happens that causes discomfort, or hits a nerve, or hits a negative feeling, human thoughts tend to take over, building walls through explanations and stories (2012). Rather than reacting to discomfort by allowing my thoughts to take over a situation, I will commit to allowing it to pass through me. Michael A. Singer refers to this as leaning away from the negative thoughts, giving them "room to pass through" , and leaning into the "seed of self" or true self (2012).

Increasing my sense of self-regard and being more authentically myself will allow me to connect better with my team (Stein & Book, 2011, p. 71). I will not need to try to impress those around me with titles or the trappings of ego; instead I will feel comfortable being myself (p. 71).

By removing my own ego from the equation, I will be able to strengthen my team by surrounding myself with people who are strong where I am weak (p. 73). Stein and Book discuss the importance of being able to recognize our own deficiencies as leaders, not in a negative way but as an opportunity to fill the gap (p. 73). As leaders, this means trusting our teams to compensate for our own weaknesses, and trusting that we still have value in that equation (p. 73). As a result, my teams will be stronger, and will be better able to contribute to the success of the organization.

In all honesty, my starting goal is not being a good leader, it's to be a good human, to live in the moment, and to be authentically myself While I hope and believe that the result will be that I am a good leader, it's not the first stepping stone. For real change to happen and for real self-improvement to take root, it has to happen in the soul, in "being". Then it moves into the mind, into "action". From there it moves into the body, the "having". To be a good leader, you have to start with the soul, and within. You don't start with the intention of being a good leader, you start with the intention of being your best self.

The Benefits of Being a Good Human

Being a "good person" in itself has a positive effect on other people. In Primal Leadership, Daniel Goleman discusses the value of being the "kind of [person] others like to be around because they are emotionally nourishing" (Goleman, 2005, p. 119). People who further their own emotional intelligence and development "leave other people in a good mood, and evoke the comment, "what a pleasure to be around someone like that" (p. 119).

While it is important to use these social skills with integrity, rather than trying to fit in (p. 119), leaders who can help their employees to feel good "lubricate mental efficiency" and create environments where people feel more "optimistic about their ability to achieve a goal, enhance creativity and decision making skills, and predispose people to be helpful" (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013, p. 14). Being an authentic, open individual has a positive effect, which can lead to positive change on teams and in organizations.
