Elle Woods from Legally Blonde embodies the idea of self reliance because she learns to be independent and pursuces her dreams even though she is continuously told she won't be successful. She was given a talent as described in the article by "The eye was placed where one ray shall fall, that it might testify that particular ray." This exemplifies that each person was given a unique determination and purservierence are required to achieve.

"what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." These lyrics by Kelly Clarkson relate to Emerson's essay about self-reliance because they both encourage getting back up and trying after you fail because you can always do better with belief in yourself.

Someone that was misunderstood in their time was Vincent Van Gogh, he lived in poverty suffering from a mental illness, homeless with little food and had only sold one painting through the course of his life before shooting himself. Never to experience any fame or recognition.

Pathos: "... When he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse as his portion..."
Emerson elaborates on the emotional appeal by saying you are who you are, you can't change it so you are to accept it and you can get as much glory out of it as work you put in.

Ethos: "Trust thy-self: every heart vibrates to that iron string."
This quote by Emerson morally connects to a person because it conveys that everything you do will effect you alone. Every attribute of your being will tie into who you are.

Logos: In his statement "In the attempt his genius deserts him; no muse befriends; no invention, no hope."
Emerson uses this quote to logically set perspective in the eyes of his audience that you must be dependent on yourself, there is no one else you can blame for your own failure.
