The couple walked down the small street holding hands. They had just finished dinner and were heading home after a long week. The man had a lot on his mind, but he didn't tell his wife that he might lose his job. He didn't know how to tell her that he failed - just like she had always feared. When they started dating, she worried that he was too unreliable and too unrealistic. A white dove rested in the tree - it was random. But he couldn't shake the bad feeling that was coming. He was convinced this woman who he was committed to would leave him as soon as she found out that he couldn't provide for her anymore. She'd tell him he wouldn't be able to support a family, and she desperately wanted to buy a home and have children. Why couldn't she see he was trying? That some things were genuinely out of his control? The hand he held felt cold and the connection felt tenuous - like a breeze could break it apart.

When the sun began to set, I strode to the subway; I couldn't stand to be stuck in that house with its old smell and the old man and the old dog. All of it was old, which apparently gave everything the right to judge me. Despite his life being a series of mistakes, my dad felt the need to weigh in on my life and dreams - of course they were never enough. How was I supposed to learn to dream when he always kept my reality small? Not to mention that no one seemed to understand me. I needed to get on the sub and get off by the park. I needed to walk and clear my head. When I finally sat down, the melodic strum of the cart moving forward helped my shoulders drop. There was hardly anyone there; it was so quiet I almost let my eyes close. I sat up straight as a shadow flashed across the floor. All the way on the other side of the cart, a rat cowered in the corner. He didn't appear brave or menacing; instead he seemed sad all alone.
