Why does George lie to the boss about his relationship with Lennie?

- George lies to the boss when he says Lennie is his cousin. He says this because Lennie is mentally handicapped and if the boss were to find out he would have them fired. It is already strange enough that two people are traveling together and considering Lennie's condition it would raise more suspicion that George is using Lennie in some way as the boss already suspects.

How does this compare with the setting described in the first chapter of the book?

- Setting in the first chapter is mainly nature, whereas, the bunkhouse is a dirty building.
- River and surrounding nature is described as beautiful and natural and the bunkhouse is old, uncomfortable, and unkempt.
- The setting is very natural in the first chapter but in the bunkhouse it shows the undesirable lifestyle of the characters who cannot enjoy the rest of the world due to the extreme poverty of the time.
