- River and surrounding nature is described as beautiful and natural and the bunkhouse is old, uncomfortable, and unkempt. 
- The setting is very natural in the first chapter but in the bunkhouse it shows the undesirable lifestyle of the characters who cannot enjoy the rest of the world due to the extreme poverty of the time.
