Finches have evolved bigger beaks over time due to changes in the environment/habitat that they occupied as well as droughts in their food sources forcing them to adapt to or find alternative food sources. Since their initial source of food had greatly decreased this allowed certain finches to evolve and develop bigger beaks and different bodies in order to eat certain types of food which includes nuts, fruits and insects. Those who didn't adapt to their food droughts or to the sudden changes exhibited in their environment, would die off due to the lack of their food sources ultimately causing starvation. The finches with the larger beaks had a great advantage and survived which then allowed them to pass on this trait to their offspring creating a greater population of finches that had larger beaks.

Darwin's Finches could evolve their beaks over time because of sudden environmental changes. the finches would need to adapt to their surrounding in order to live and they would have to change with their surrounding environment as their environment changed. the finches who's beaks didn't evolve were not in the environment needed for them to evolve and have bigger beaks. those finches either had some other source of food and nutrition or they adapted and found different ways to survive. some finches though would not be as lucky and would slowly die off as a result of starvation and lack of the proper nutrients.

Finches would have developed bigger beaks over time because of what food would be available at the time. If there were more seeds available then their beaks would evolve into something that would specialize in eating and finding seeds. If there were more insects than there are seeds available, then they would evolve their beaks to be able to catch insects better than their old beaks. The other finches whose beaks didn't evolve or inherit the beaks better suited for insects would slowly die off because of starvation. It would all depend on what food is in abundance, and is much easier to find than their current diet, for their beaks to change into something that is more geared towards finding and eating that particular thing.

Over time finches were able to evolve bigger beaks due to a variety of factors affecting them. For example, the changes within the environment, causing drought...etc, made a need for change in order for the finches to survive. So the adaptation to a changed environment led to a larger-beaked finch population in the following generation. Long, pointed beaks made some of them more fit for picking seeds out of cactus fruits. Shorter, stouter beaks served best for eating seeds found on the ground. Sudden environmental variations caused a need for the finches to evolve bigger beaks. Research showed that finches with larger beaks had a survival advantage in the 1977 drought. This was because in order to avoid starvation and get the nutrition they needed, they needed longer, pointed beaks. Because of the need for a different food source pushed by the different enviromental variations, finches had to evolve different beaks as a means of survival.

Finches beaks evolved as a result of several components. However, the environment played a major role. The evolution of their features are dependent on the resources in their habitat. The food in which they relied on for survival, changed over time. When small, soft seeds were no longer prominent in their environment, large hard seeds became the main food source. The finches needed to adapt their beaks in order to overcome starvation. The finches that did survive had evolved, larger beaks, that they then passed on to their offspring. These offspring inherited traits that gave them better chance of survival, and progressively the "weaker" small beaked finches died off.
