Susan Hill’s novel, The Woman in Black, is set in Victorian times where we meet an ageing Arthur Kipps who then recounts his dark tale of when he was a young man. In this tales we see Arthur encounter ghostly apparitions and spine shivering encounters with the Woman in Black. The book is well written, you get sucked in and you almost feel as if you are continuously standing by Arthur’s side experiencing everything as he is. Although I personally wouldn’t pick up this gothic novel, I’m glad I read it.

Alice Holberton

The book begins with Arthur Kipps celebrating the holidays with his family in a cosy little cottage. Then, his step children start to tell ghost stories, he acts strange and then storms out of the room. Turns out he had a super natural encounter when he was a young man. Part of his job as a solicitor is to sort through the deceased’s papers, as a young man he was sent to the town of Crythin Gifford to sort through the late Mrs Alice Drablow’s papers. First he went to her funeral and sees a ghostly figure of a lady there. He asks questions about her to the towns folk, who refuse to speak of it. He then goes to Eel Marsh house, which is cut off from the main land by the tide at certain times if the day, upon his arrival he begins to sort through mountains of papers. He decides to stay the night and strange things happen, like a rocking chair moving by its self and the repeated sound of a pony and trap getting stuck in the Marsh. Eventually Arthur figures out that the woman is the ghost of Jennet Humfrye, whose child died in an accident, and now haunts the area and it is revealed that every time she is seen, a child dies. This time no child dies, he goes back to London, gets married to a woman called Stella and has a child, Joseph. They are at a fair Stella and Joseph get in a pony and trap, he sees the woman, they crash and both of them die. Consequently Arthur doesn’t like ghost stories.

I enjoyed the book and its descriptive language. It really pulls the reader in and makes you feel for the town folk who have suffered the curse.

It isn’t what I would normally read, a little dark and quite slow burning.

The film adaption has a different flow and ends with him, his wife and child all being reunited in the afterlife.

I would recommend the book to my younger sister, when she is a bit older, as I think it would really inspire some of her art.

The woman in black review

The woman in black is a spooky novel about a middle age man (Author kipps) who goes to sort out paperwork at Eel marsh house. The house is secluded and empty due to Mrs Alice Drablow’s passing. Arthur starts to realise that there are supernatural things that are happing around him. This interreges him, having a strong fascination to that house.

I liked that Susan Hill the writer has created such a unique book that has twisted minds for centuries. The book fascinated me with the actual woman in black’s story. Who she is? And why she is not at piece with herself nor Mrs Drablow. As along with most ghost stories children are involved; being pure and innocent they always seem to be the venerable ones in the situation. Normally making the reader feel sorrier or even more connected to the story as they want to find out each individuals story and why the killings are happing in this way and why is the woman in black connected to them?

Parts of the story that I didn’t like would have to be when the woman in black is at the funeral, described as an ill looking woman with a “wasted face” I found this part a bit creepy, but not enough for a ghost story. I think as this is the first time we see the woman in black it should be a lot more dramatic, because at the end of the day there is going to be different spirits at a grave yard that could appear spooky in any dusk light. I think the woman in black should enter the story like a ship sinking and actually making a big bold entrance just like her exit. The woman in black just seems to follow people about appearing in different places and then a child dies.

holly austin

The Women in Black is about a young solicitor Arthur Kipps. When you start reading the book Arthur is gearing up to tell us about a terrible incident from the past, The young solicitor is sent on a trip to Crythin Gifford to settle the affairs of a recently deceased women named Alice Drablow, who lived at Eel Marsh House. The first hint that all is not what it seems is on the train, when Arthur meets a man named Sam Daily. And everyone in the town of Crythin Gifford seems a bit edgy when Arthur mentions Eel Marsh house. Arthur then finds out that things weren’t as simple as he first thought and there are piles on piles of paper to sort through. Arthur also sees flashes of the women in black, which gets worse the more he stays at the house. After every time Arthur sees the women in black a child dies and Arthur later finds out that it was the women in black causes the child to die.
-Megan Tizzard

A young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. In London, solicitor Arthur Kipps still grieves over the death of his beloved wife Stella on the delivery of their son Joseph four years before. His employer gives him a last chance to keep his job, and he is assigned to travel to the remote village of Crythin Gifford to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh House that belonged to the recently deceased Mrs. Drablow. Arthur befriends Daily on the train and the man offers a ride to him to the Gifford Arms inn. Arthur has a cold reception and the owner of the inn tells that he did not receive the request of reservation and there is no available room. The next morning, Arthur meets solicitor Jerome who advises him to return to London. However, Arthur goes to the isolated manor and soon he finds that Eel Marsh House is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black. He also learns that the woman lost her son, drowned in the marsh, and she seeks revenge, taking the children of the terrified locals. He parts in the book that I liked was how mysterious it got. For example, the rocking chair. When the chair moves back and forth, it means that she is near. That she is in that room watching everything. That made me more interested in the book and drawed me in. The wording in the book also. That made me pay attention because I was learning new words that I haven’t even heard before. The words and the way they spoke already gave me the impression that this was in the old times. Historic times. Cody cheeseman

Women in black book reviewBy Ryan Harris The book was really good. It made me imagine what is happening in my own mind and was better than the film, because in the book you can describe more of what is happening then in the film and in the film you have to guess what is happening which can be annoying so in my opinion. The book is better than the film because I love books that describe what is going on in it which I would say is better. The one thing I didn’t like about the book is sometimes hard to understand what is going on in it but eventually I do understand it once I read more of it. I also liked how it was different then the film the ending, the dog nearly drowning and how Arthur spots the women in black a lot more times or hear about it. I would recommend this book to my friend outside of college because he is into horror a lot and I think he would enjoy reading the women in black.

In the book the woman in black a man called Arthur Kipps takes a work trip to a house called Eel marsh house which once was home to a woman called Mrs Drablow. This house is haunted by the spirit of said Mrs Drablow and she is known as the woman in black. When people see Arthur and ask what he is doing they are very reluctant to tell him about the reason they’re scared of the place but he soon finds out at the funeral when he sees a woman in a black dress but no one else sees her . He then keeps seeing her until the day when he has finished and returns home. But when he thinks he has gotten away from the woman she comes back and causes the death of his child and wife by spooking the horse which is towing their carriage.

What I like about the book is that it tells the story from arthurs point of view but also gives us obvious hints of what is going to happen and foreshadows it. What I didn’t like about the book is that the flow of the story is very slow.

The film was completely different to the book because it shows different things that didn’t happen in the book.

The Woman in Black Review

The Woman in Black is about a man named Arthur Kipps who is sent to attend the funeral of Alice Drablow, and recover her papers. Mrs Drablow was the sole inhabitant of Eel Marsh House, a now abandoned, isolated house located on its own island on a causeway with high and low tides. At the funeral, Arthur sees a wasted woman dressed in all Black hiding away from the rest of the people. This is the Woman in Black, afterwards, Arthur is sent over to the isolated house to begin retrieving the papers of Mrs Drablow. At the house, Arthur witnesses the mysterious woman again, he initially tries to ignore it and get on with his task, but when he returns to the village, a child has died a horrible death, and the villagers are all alarmed of Arthur’s visit to the house. After the incident, Arthur tries to find out who this woman is and the story behind the place, eventually, he manages to force someone to tell him and finds out that whenever the woman is seen, for however long and whoever by, that there is a certainty that a child has died. Arthur finds out that the woman is a mother of a child who died in one of the high tides on the causeway, eventually, they think they have managed to end it somehow but the curse carries on.

Arthur then thinks the woman is gone for good and when he, his wife and their new child are out one day, the Woman in Black shows up again and causes the death of Arthur’s child and eventually his wife too.

The main thing I like about the book is the way the story develops, unlike other stories, where all that there is to know is already known instantly, with The Woman in Black, the facts and plot develop as the book goes on, at the start, we do not know the reason why this woman is even showing up, but as the book progresses, we find out about the reasons as to why she does and who she even is in the first place. The description of the various happenings inside and outside of the house also add that element of fear that a ghost story should have, I also believe that there is a certain element of suspense as the book goes on, as we have to find out towards the end, how to stop the curse, not in the beginning like other stories, where, the way to do it is known but they can’t do it for whatever reason. The way the book progresses with the story does give a certain element of mystery which I particularly like and feel is very appropriate in this type of book.

The thing I don’t like is how the story seems to skip at times, vital things that the reader will need to know, like for example, the woman’s identity and past is only really described in a few lines, making it very hard to actually understand the events that have lead up to that point. In my opinion, there is not enough of a character development about the woman to actually fully understand her whole story, I think at least a paragraph should have focused in on this. Another thing I didn’t like too much was how the story is very complicated and hard to understand at times, the way the curse is removed is particularly complicated because we just seem to be rushed right into it rather than having the full instructions and moments leading up to it.

The film compared to the book, well, there is no comparison really, the book is much better. In the book, we have a full series of events and a beginning, middle and end, the film doesn’t seem to follow the accurate events. The events in the film seem like they have been invented by the film producers rather than linking the storyline to the book. The ending is the main point, instead of having the child and wife killed at the end, the child and Arthur are killed instead, and inaccurately by a train instead of something in a park. The film also uses shock value too much, there doesn’t seem to be a single scene without something making us jump, which to me, really ruins the storyline with all the scare scenes which aren’t serious. The book is much easier to understand as we are not being scared out of our seats too much to even follow the story.

He then decides to get some fresh air while he lets his meal settle down but as soon he steps outside he starts to have flashbacks of one of his Bosses customers Mrs Alice Drablow and her house that he had go and attend her funeral and stay at her house while also looking for some documents that his boss needed so that the house could be passed down to any relatives. And to collect any legal documents. Arthur started to go crazy because he had seen the Woman in Black and so he decided to leave with the legal documents to get rid of the curse. But the curse followed him and killed his wife and son.

The things I liked about the book was that there a sense of mystery around Mrs Drablow and what happened to her sister and her son before he drowned in the water and that his body was never found.

What I didn’t like was that it didn’t much focus on Mrs Drablow much in the story because she was the main reason that Arthur went up to Crythin Gifford to get her documents and that she should have been made a more important character because without her he wouldn’t have gone in the first place

Soon after his arrival, it becomes clear that the villagers are hiding a terrible secret. Kipps discovers that his late client's house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who is trying to find someone and something she lost, and that no one -- not even the children -- is safe from her terrible wrath.

A young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. In London, solicitor Arthur Kipps still grieves over the death of his beloved wife Stella on the delivery of their son Joseph four years before.

London solicitor Arthur Kipps is sent to the village of Crythin Gifford to review the personal papers of the deceased Mrs. Drablow. Arthur hasn't had a successful career - at least in part - as he is still grieving for his wife, who died giving birth to their son Joseph four years before. Crythin Gifford is a bleak village and its residents are anything but welcoming. Arthur realizes that no one is the village is very happy with the fact that he will be working at Eel Marsh manor. He soon learns that the house is haunted by the Woman in Black, the ghost of a woman whose son drowned in a bog. Whenever she appears, a child from the village dies.

Arthur makes a daguerotype go round, and he sees for a split second, the dark eyes of the woman in black. Scribbled photographs: a shadow passes by, and the dog begins to bark. Arthur follows the dog, who barks close to the tombstone of Nathaniel Drablow (Ashley Foster). When they go back to the mansion, Arthur sees the Woman in Black (Liz White), retreating from close to the window. When Arthur goes to that room, he looks out and sees the dilapidated view. Right on his back, the Woman in Black appears and immediately disappears. He doesn't see her, but he feels something so he looks around. In a wooden box, he finds cards addressed to Nathaniel from his birth mother, The Woman in Black, signing as "MUMMY". That woman was Jennet, who had a tombstone alongside Nathaniel's. Through the documents, it looks like Jennet gave her child on adoption (as she was deemed mentally unfit to raise her child). It is also revealed that Nathaniel is adopted by Jannet's sister Alice who keeps this as a secret and raises Nathaniel as her own son. Through many letters, Arthur comes to know that Jannet was very displeased as she wasn't allowed to visit her son. After the accident that took the life of Nathaniel, his body was never found in the marshlands.

I don’t realy know as I am a siv brain for information so the internet helped me

The most disappointing thing was there was not a face-to-face moment with Arthur and the women in black as I could have been more interesting. In addition, what if she talked what could she have said to Arthur and what would he say to her?

Comparing the book to the film is hard to judge, because they have different and new scenes than the book including the ending.

Woman in black

The story is very interesting and carries a lot of suspense with it. Arthur Kipps who is a solicitor is asked to visit Crythin Gifford by his boss Mr Bentley, in order to look through all the paperwork of Mrs Alice Drablow who has recently died in El Marsh House.

On Arthur's Journey to Crythin Gifford he meets a man with the name Sam Daily who also lives in the small town. Sam seems very interested when he realises that Arthur is visiting purely on the fact that he needs to sort through Mrs Drablows papers.

Once he has arrived at El Marsh House and seen the amount of papers he has to organise he realises that this is going to take much longer than a couple of days as planned and knew it was going to be job that needs a lot of time and energy to be done correctly. As the story goes on a lot of mysterious things happen that scare Arthur into believing something bad is happening in the town. When they all attend the funeral, Arthur sees the “woman in black”, who appears to be dieing of some dreadful disease. Keckwick drives Arthur back to El Marsh House after the Funeral in the Pony and Trap.

It turns out that after a few occasions of the “Woman in black” making an appearance, Arthur finds a death Certificate of someone called Nathaniel who ends up being Jannet’s Son (Jannet being Mrs Drablows sister).

After a lot of investigating Arthur Kipps works out from the piles of paperwork that Jannet is the “Woman in Black”.

Whenever Arthur tried to talk to someone about these occasions they would shut him down and block it out. The reason behind this that Arthur has now worked out is because everyone wants to deny that Jennet has been seen because a child dies everytime she appears.

Jannet’s son had died in the pony and trap along with His nursemaid and Keckwicks father, due to drowning in the Marsh. Jannet watched the whole thing happen.

Once Arthur had arrived back home after his long business trip. Him and his wife have a baby named Joseph, but a couple years later, they all went to a fair and Joseph insisted he went on the pony and trap ride, only to find that the woman in black appeared again and caused a crash, meaning that his son died there and then and his wife died 10 months later.

There were a few things I liked about the story.

These being:-

The suspense that is built throughout the story.

The very clearly written story line.

How each mini event all linked into each other.

The cliffhangers that were put on the end of the paragraphs to make you keep reading.

There were a few things I don't like about the story.

These being:-

The length of the story.

Some of the language that was used.

The difficulty in understanding some vocabulary.

I didn't watch the film but I imagine that the film would be better to the book as it doesn't require as much concentration and it would also give you a really feel for story line.

I would however highly recommend this book as it does draw you in and it makes for a good horror. 4 star rating.

Arthur Kipps arrives at the mysterious and foreboding Eel Marsh House to attend to the estate and funeral of Mrs. Alice Drablow. Arthur comes across a locked door in Mrs Drablows estate which is now unlocked for no apparent reason and inside he discovers a nursery overflowing with signs of the lives of former children and reunites the woman in black with her son.

i liked the writing style of this story, which made the book an easy read and left you wanting more everytime you finished a chapter. The story was written descriptively to create an eery atmosphere and tension but I found the ending a little predictable yet rounded off the book nicely. in contrast I thought the storyline was poor and was relieved the book was a fairly short one. Mists and tides isolating you on an island is a bit cliched.

The Woman in Black is a ghost story by Susan Hill, in which Arthur Kipps relates his haunting experiences at Eel Marsh House.
The tale begins on Christmas Eve, when Arthur's step-children invite him to tell a ghost story. Arthur is too disturbed by his memories to share his story aloud, so he writes it down. In his story, a young Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is sent to settle the affairs of Alice Drablow. He sees a woman dressed in black at her funeral, though apparently no one else does. At Eel Marsh House, a house beyond a causeway, Arthur is haunted by noises and sightings of the woman. Eventually a local man, Sam Daily, reveals the full story of how Alice Drablow's sister, Jennet, haunts the house. He explains that a child dies each time the woman in black is seen. At the end of the story, Arthur sees the woman in black again and his wife and son die in a terrible accident.

I liked that the story was very easy to read, the text was understandable and the way they described the setting of each story. Also the way they portrayed the characters and made them interact with each other allowed to to feel as if i were there standing in the conservation.

However i didn't like that the main characters family died at the ending because it makes me feel the BIG sad :(

Charlotte Plot Summary – Arthur Kipps was sent to Eel Marsh House, in which the house was haunted. Throughout his stay at the house, Arthur attends a funeral where he spots a woman dressed in all black, he realises that he is the only one who is able to see this mysterious individual. Arthur Kipps encounters many strange occurrences throughout the house which doesn’t end, every time he went back to the village more children kept dying, until at the end he undug the woman in black’s son and put him in the same grave. Sadly at the end Arthur kipps and his son died together What I liked about the book –Some of the things I like from the book include, how I was able to visualise the characteristics due to the in-depth detail of each character, this allowed me to picture what was happen and imagine myself in the positions of each character allowing me to have a more clear understanding of the story. What I didn’t like about the book – I didn’t like how the book was interpreted compared to the movie, as they had slight differences including the endings. As of this I thought that I was reading a different book to the movie, as I found that the movie was a lot clearer compared to the book and easier to follow along with the story line, whereas the book was long.

The Woman In Black, written by Susan Hill, where a character called Arthur goes through something he’ll never forget, the presence of the woman in black which centred around a place going by the name of Eel Marsh House, to which who so happened to continuously kill children if she had been seen by anyone, ruining and ripping apart the lives of many. I would say as a whole it was rather extraordinary! The sense of mystery given was overwhelming enough to keep me interested in the story, as I wanted to figure out the deep meanings behind some factors in the story of the main character’s experiences, out of my own curiosity. I brought together my own theories that I’m currently still working on, which has left me quite astonished to be frank with you, although there’s still some things I haven’t quite pieced together. What I’m saying is the book was good basically, I like the elements included, although the story was a bit slow to get to the point and I wouldn’t exactly say I found it scary, as I didn’t really have the sense of fear installed within me in parts that were supposed to be utterly horrifying or tension building. I don’t hate it, but I would say I’m somewhere along the scale of “like”. As someone who writes stories myself as a hobby in my spare time, I applaud your work for the time and effort put in, but I sincerely hope you take my criticism into consideration, as I believe I’m rather on point, and many other people may even agree with me.

The Brief plot summary is about a character named Arthur which is haunted by a ghost that follows him around and kills people. What you like about the book? Not really a book I would choose or film. I prefer action books and thrillers. What didn’t you like about the book? I didn’t really like the book because I’m not a huge fan of reading and the language was very confusing, also it sort of dragged to get to the actual women in black. I couldn’t get my head around the book because it was making me fall asleep a bit. How you thought the film compared to the book. The book was completely different with the whole story. The ending of both of them were really different and it was smoother than the book. I didn’t like both of them as it didn’t interest me at all because it was so boring. Jake Milward

Plot summary is that Arthur kips and the family are telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve gets frustrated that they ask him to he walks away this book is him looking back at his traumatizing past. He is given a job to find paper work to do with a dead woman and there’s a woman in black scaring him and he is petrified and he thinks she’s ‘cursed’. What I like about woman in black is how it leads up to the climax and its build up scary yet slow and intriguing don’t like about woman in black the repetitive nature of this book that is woman in black

the woman in black is a book by Susan hill, it is about a man who notices a ghost called the woman in black. she is an evil spirit that makes children kill themselves in different ways. Arthur (the main character) has to solve the reason and break the curse on her.
this is a very good book and an even better film, I think it is very mysterious and thrilling at the same time. the one thing I didn't like the book is that their wasn't that much backstory to do with the woman in black but all in all it was a pretty good film. I feel like the film was better than the book but only because it had a better visual representation and made a bit more sense to me. I would recommend this book to read as it is so interesting and really makes you want to read it more.

As well as this its creepy and sometimes unsettling and this is overall what the novel is set out to do.

I didn’t like the book purely due to the fact that I am not into gothic horror as well as this I didn’t enjoy the lack of information, we got about Mrs. Drablow I find this a shame as she is such an important character in the book and I feel that it would have been nice to know more about her.

The woman in blacks was written by Susan hill. It is a horror story that involves a ghost. The main character Arthur Kipps starts the story by writing down his experience for his family what happened at Eel Marsh House. It first starts at Alice Drablow’s funeral where he first sees the woman in black. Daily rescues Arthur Kipps and explained to him what was going on. Arthur then finds the nursery and the woman in black returns. Arthurs wife and child die. The end.

My opinion on the book “The woman in black” is that I didn’t find it completely interesting. This is because we read parts of the book every week and I had forgot what happened the week before. This meant I instantly didn’t know what was going on and didn’t pay attention.

Meddling Kids Book Review – By Ruby-Anne Reed

Meddling Kids is a dark twist on the childhood classic of Scooby Doo; different characters with similar stereotyping with the exception of one character. In their mid-twenties, traumatised by certain inconsistencies in their final case, three of the four former Blyton Summer Detective Club members return to Blyton Hills to face their demons. Literally.

Some things I really enjoy about Meddling Kids are the way it presents itself, from the writing techniques to the cover. Even the first sentences set the tone for the rest of the story, gripping you to the point that your heart begins to race as if you were experiencing those things yourself; “It starts when you pull the light chain and light doesn’t come. Then you know you will never wake up in time, you will not make it to the end of this paragraph alive.” Is an example of how the author breaks the forth-wall in a way as to not ruin the flow of the story and leads you to want to read onward.

Another thing I like is how the author swaps between prose and script in a way that does not break the flow of the piece, somehow both consistent and inconsistent. It feels very natural in the style of writing and works to expand the possibilities of the creativity involved with fictional writing. Here is an example “She had to step forward – Insert close-up shot of military surplus boots abusing the floorboards – to locate the person she’d come to fetch…” this style of writing is natural despite the difference.

The Woman in Black - Plot summaryThe Woman in Black is a ghost story by Susan Hill, in which Arthur Kipps relates his haunting experiences at Eel Marsh House. The tale begins on Christmas Eve, when Arthur's step-children invite him to tell a ghost story. Arthur is too disturbed by his memories to share his story aloud, so he writes it down.In his story, a young Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is sent to settle the affairs of Alice Drablow.

The book of The woman in black is about an accountant, Arthur Kipps who’s sent up to the North side of the country to Elmarsh House to sort out financial papers as the client had died Mrs. Drabblow. So the book starts off with Arthur Kipps in his country house with his wife and children. The children are telling ghost stories and the they try and encourage their dad to tell ghost story but he couldn’t as it brought very bad memory’s from Elmarsh House so he set him self to get rid of the memory’s for ever by writing a book and keep them there. So when he gets to the old village during the funeral of Mrs. Drabblow a mysterious skinny woman appears at the back of the church but then disappears making Arthur uneasy. So he had to go to Elmarsh House for about a week and many creepy things happen and get him really worked and stars to not know the difference between fantasy and real life. This is all I’ve read.

The biggest thing I liked about the book was the plot, at least from what I read, this is because the plot keeps you gripped to reading as you didn’t k ow what was going to happen.

If I’m honest this kind of book isn’t my cup of tea so purely because of this.
