Linking in music is an appeal to the human subconscious of finding comfort in repetitiveness, whether it be in day to day activities in life or in music. Ratliff summarizes this concept with the following quote "We love music to help us with repetitive motion, because there is so much repetitive motion necessary for living." (Ratliff, Page 207). Linking is used quite often by musical artists as it is a pretty useful tool in conveying emotions and achieving. "We tell ourselves that---and we may be right--that repetitive motions, in large forms, cultivates an almost spiritual interest in security and regularity, and guards against chaos (Ratliff, Page 207). The concept of linking is used extensively in music because of how it is a common concept that we unknowingly in our everyday lives. The concept of linking is just as intriguing and as essential as many of the other musical concepts Ratcliff mentions in his book.
