As you can see this is when Maximus is standing beside Aurelius with a face full of dirt, tired eyes, and poor apparel he is still appreciated. He was beside the emperor with no links or relation. He had no title but a war general named by the emperor impressed by his leadership. Maximus was just a citizen of Rome serving for Rome that was a leader for his men. He may have been dirty, and poor looking but he was still the general of the army because of his leadership.

In this picture you can see the amount of leadership Maximus' had. He was now a slave and no matter what he was, he still led men into believing and being strong together. The owner of the slaves has overpowered them in the picture with money and his title, but not from his leadership. The slaves stood behind Maximus and he was not leading these slaves into victory by his title but his leadership.

In this scene Commodus thinks because of his title he is the leader of everyone and was threatened by anyone who might take his place. The picture shows the theme because it shows title represents Commodus and leadership representing Maximus. Even though Maximus was a slave fighting against the evil emperor he lead the citizens of Rome through his leadership in fighting as a Gladiator and for that he had a title.

As you see the background in the scene you can see that everyone came to watch Maximus and the Gladiators. He fought with just a shield and sword while chained to another slave. The theme is shown that even though Maximus was a gladiator the people of Rome loved him because of how he fought. He was the leader of the Gladiators and was supposed to be the leader of Rome. Even as a slave or a normal citizen Maximus was loved and respected for his leadership and character, not for his title.

This scene reveals the true identity of a Commodus. Even with his title as emperor that he murdered to gain you can see he has no leadership. He wanted to be praise like Maximus but didn't want to be a true leader. He wanted control. This shows that just because you have a title does not mean you have true leadership. The face of Commodus shows the childish jealousy that no leader or emperor would show.

This is a very important scene that shows what Maximus wanted his title to be. He never wanted to be the emperor of Rome or the General of the Army, but the Father to his children and the Husband to his wife. The leadership and sacrifice that he made for his country is true leadership. The major theme of this film in many scenes prove that true leadership doesn't mean you have a title. Maximus was an everyday man that fought for freedom and innocent men and wanted to lead people into a republic
