Hook: Imagine being a slave on a plantation, working for hours just to survive. Most people couldn't imagine being a slave because they have never experienced that kind of situation.
Background information: Well, Frederick Douglass could imagine it because he experienced it! In his book, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he talks about his experiences and life of slavery. What is so amazing about the book is that he uses such great language: figurative language, to support his position.

Thesis statement: Along with the use of figurative language, Douglass uses his experience to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slaveowners, which supports his position to end slavery.
